What is a hostel in 21st century Britain?

To date, despite common assumptions, little is known about the diverse landscape of hostel provision in 21st century Britain. That's why we set out to map the characteristics of hostels across the UK to answer this fundamental question.

Based on the largest ever survey of UK hostels, this new report provides a comprehensive overview of current provision and, using this as a foundation, proposes a new taxonomy and a roadmap for testing different models and service interventions.

When we started planning the conference some months ago, with the prospect of a new UK Government on the horizon, we wondered if this would mark a new beginning in our collective efforts to end homelessness.

We’ve explored what this theme means to individuals and organisations - many of whom are joining as speakers, panellists, or attendees. While the scale of the challenge is big, there is a sense of hope and optimism for change. At the conference, we’ll shine a light on the learnings from the past and the path to evidence-led solutions.

We're proud to launch a new collection of images in our groundbreaking photo library that sheds light on an often-overlooked crisis: rural homelessness. From woodland camps to sofa surfing - rural homelessness takes many forms.

Our new collection counters stigmatising imagery, presenting respectful, co-produced photographs that preserve dignity and inspire empathy. The rural image collection adds to the world's first open source bank of non-stigmatising images of homelessness, expanding our understanding of this critical issue.

Visit the link in our bio to explore this collection and share it widely with your networks.

Pictures have the power to change our views, challenge false narratives, and improve empathy towards those who are experiencing homelessness.

That's why, in 2023, we launched the UK's first free library of non-stigmatising images of real people experiencing homelessness, for anyone to use. The images have been downloaded thousands of times, and we've just launched the latest collection - these are just a few images of the people we had the privilege of meeting at .

Find out more about the project and see all of the new collection at the link in our bio.

In just three months, our Homelessness Impact Forum will head to Manchester.

The theme for this year is 'A new beginning? Accelerating evidence-based solutions to homelessness'.

By mid-October, a new government will have been in power for an initial 100 days. Will we see signs of a new beginning? What can we do to ensure that any gains are long-lasting? Join leaders and innovators from across the UK and beyond to collaborate on efforts to end homelessness for good.

You can book your in-person or online ticket via the links in our bio.

New Event! Evidence Notes: Prison Discharge.

28th February, 12:00 - 12:45pm. Free.

Our team has drawn together research evidence from across the world of what we know about what works to prevent homelessness when individuals are discharged from prison.

This latest addition to our Evidence Notes series provides a deliberately concise synthesis of the best evidence about prison discharge and homelessness. We want to put these insights at the fingertips of people working in frontline and management roles and who make policy decisions about release from prison and housing and homelessness services.

We will give a short presentation of the evidence on prison discharge and homelessness, and then host an informal discussion.

Maria Ossa, our Evidence and Data Lead, will present a summary of the report and Guillermo Rodriquez, our Director of Evidence and Data, will chair the discussion.

Our Evidence Notes series provides a synthesis of the best evidence about prison discharge and homelessness. Join the discussion.

Case management can be seen as a vital support system, delivered either by a whole team or just an individual who works carefully to figure out the help someone needs, planning for it and making sure they can access the right services.

We’re pleased to share the latest insights from our systematic review with Cardiff University and the University of Exeter, where we delved into over 100 studies on case management to understand its impact on tackling homelessness.
