Hear Art is a non-profit which funds deaf filmmakers to make independent short films (in association with The Royal Association for Deaf people and academy-award winner Slick Films Ltd). Hear Art is a platform founded by Cindy Sasha and Rachel Shenton; with a focus on merging the deaf and hearing community in the UK film industry, helping deaf people to develop their careers and make the cross ove
r into mainstream media. Currently the breach between the deaf and hearing worlds is too wide. Many deaf creatives face communication and accessibility barriers when trying to showcase their work to a mainstream audience. This project aims to build a bridge between the deaf and hearing worlds and open up a dialogue about inclusivity and accessibility in the Arts and Media. Hear Art’s platform will showcase the talent, experience and vision of deaf creatives; and their capability to work within a predominantly hearing film industry. It will challenge communication in front and behind the lens; delivering high-performance drama, comedy or documentary that can be enjoyed by both deaf and hearing audiences. The Hear Art project is hoping to raise £30,000 to produce deaf-led short films that will support the career development of deaf filmmakers, enabling a transition into mainstream media in the UK.
