The world is losing its fight against malaria. And a single business decision taken more than 10 years ago has made things worse. A disease that has a devastating toll in Asia and Africa and is showing up in developed countries like the US.

Researchers blame changes to a Swiss company’s bed nets for a rise in cases thousands of miles away. Cheap, durable and easy to distribute, insecticide-coated bed nets have for more than two decades been a vital tool in managing the disease. They have been credited with preventing 68% of the cases between 2000 and 2015, according to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

But in the years since, something has gone badly wrong. Read the Big Take here: https://bloom.bg/3T6R2CT

Extreme climate events increase risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) Difficult access to healthcare is contributing to this increase. Climate-related concerns may lead some people to change the way they prevent pregnancy and protect themselves against STIs.

Dear decision-makers across government, business and philanthropy!

Coronavirus affects all of us. With no respect for borders, the pandemic has shown just how interconnected our world is, and the need for us to be united in our response. We are all in this together, but COVID-19 has especially affected the poorest and most vulnerable across our world. Our response must not reflect that same inequality.

The pandemic has us facing an ongoing global social and economic crisis that threatens everyone’s wellbeing. This crisis demands truly extraordinary action and you are in a unique position to help kickstart a global recovery by ensuring everyone, everywhere has access to life-saving vaccines, tests and treatments.

According to the WHO, we must vaccinate at least 60% of the world’s population, equally distributed across regions, to break the chain of transmissions and ultimately end the pandemic. If we don’t, the virus and its mutations will continue to threaten us all and undermine the global economy. We need your support for the following:: – Fully fund global efforts to develop and equitably distribute COVID-19 vaccines, tests and treatments through the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator.

– Governments: Donate surplus vaccines to COVAX for fair and equal distribution and help urgently increase vaccine manufacturing capacity to meet the global demand, including by supporting the sharing of intellectual property and technology.

– Pharmaceutical companies: Ensure the vaccine is distributed as a global public good through non-profit, transparent pricing and intellectual property and technology sharing to make vaccines accessible and affordable to all.

The world must work together to end the pandemic and recover better together for a more equal future. If we are united, we can emerge from this crisis stronger and safer and get back on track to ending extreme poverty and achieving the UN Global Goals.

Act together for our future.

One year ago today, the World Health Organization officially declared COVID-19 a pandemic—and turned all of our lives upside down.

A hug went from a warm greeting to a health hazard. We were forced to separate from friends and family; we lost friends and family.

The numbers are staggering, but statistics and case counts will never truly measure the pandemic’s toll on communities across the globe. Those we’ve lost can never be replaced
