As an amber heat warning hits parts of the UK, we’re thinking of all the engineers out in the field working hard to keep the country cool and running. Your work matters every single day, especially in weather like this.

If you need reliable, independent, peer‑reviewed guidance, don’t forget that the IOR has a wide range of technical resources available (including some open to non‑members)

New IOR Education Guidance Note on in-house training programmes for refrigeration design engineers

This new guidance note (GNET19) outlines an example of an effective in-house training and engineering development programme, and demonstrates how employers can successfully build their own design capability, develop future technical leaders and create a sustainable skills pipeline for both their organisation and the wider industry.

While this guidance draws on a specific employer partnership, the principles set out are transferable and can be adapted to suit different organisational sizes, structures and training providers.

IOR Education Guidance Note 5 (GNET5) provides a standard specification for the knowledge, skills and behaviour relevant to the role of RACHP Design and/or Applications Engineers.

Both guidance notes are available for free from the IOR website at https://ior.org.uk/technical/rachp-publications

HSE is currently holding a consultation on the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR). The consultation invites stakeholder feedback on a series of legislative and non‑legislative proposals aimed at reducing work‑related ill health. It also explores ways to lighten the reporting burden on businesses, including options to simplify how incidents are reported to the regulator.

The consultation will close on 30 June 2026 - find out more at https://consultations.hse.gov.uk/hse/proposals-riddor-2013/

Join us on 4th June for a Masterclass led by Tim Thain MInstR, who will take a deep look at how intelligent control strategies can be applied at system level to drive measurable performance gains. Building on the foundations established in the previous IOR Masterclass on Smart Controls, the talk will move beyond individual components to focus on how integrated control approaches can optimise refrigeration and heat pump systems in real operating conditions.

The IOR masterclass series is designed to support colleges and employers who take on trainees (or anyone who wants to refresh their knowledge). The online classes are broadcast live but also recorded and added to a video reference library.

Register and find out more about this masterclass as well as future and past sessions at https://ior.org.uk/education-and-careers/masterclass

The Tinsley Fund was set up in memory of Mike Tinsley, a respected engineer and IOR member whose career reflected professionalism, resilience, and support for others. The fund offers targeted financial help for people facing barriers to entering or progressing in the refrigeration and air conditioning sector.

The fund’s scope is specifically designed to support individuals who face challenges such as physical or long‑term health conditions, learning differences, mental health conditions, or difficulties accessing training or equipment, including ex‑service personnel moving into technical roles.

Grants of up to £1,000 can be used for training courses, specialist tools, practical training support, or assistive technology. Successful applications will also receive a one-year IOR student membership or EngTech subscription. Applications are simple and open year‑round, with successful applicants asked to share a short update afterwards to help inspire others to join and progress within our sector.

More information and guidance are available on the IOR website education pages at https://ior.org.uk/education-and-careers/career-resources-and-outreach/the-tinsley-fund-supporting-training-where-its-needed-most or by contacting [email protected].

Please share this opportunity with anyone who may benefit.

On 15 May 2026, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) announced its decision to delay changes to the phasedown to beyond 2027.

As a result, for 2027, the relevant phasedown step in Annex 5 of the F-Gas Regulation will continue to apply. A statement confirming this, which has been published on gov.uk, is available at https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/amending-the-hydrofluorocarbon-phasedown-schedule.

For details of the current phasedown programme and existing GB legislative requirements related to F-Gases, see https://www.gov.uk/guidance/fluorinated-gases-f-gases.

The Institute of Refrigeration will continue to monitor developments related to the proposal to reform the HFC phasedown schedule and issue updates to members when available.

Systems Design & Efficiency
Explore how systems design shapes energy consumption and overall efficiency at the IOR Talk & Tour event on 19 May in Birmingham. Justin Southwick F.Inst.R will demonstrate how design choices directly influence energy use and share practical guidance on designing for maximum efficiency.

This session is part of a wider programme of expert-led talks. Attendees will not only gain insights into energy‑efficient system design but also details on strategies for reducing Scope 3 emissions through reuse and recycling, and the role of cooling technologies in shaping consumer behaviour within food retail.

Alongside a guided tour of cutting‑edge facilities and dedicated networking opportunities, the event offers a chance to stay informed, earn CPD certification, connect with peers, and see how innovation is driving the future of sustainable cooling.
