Our Space Telescope is giving astronomers an unprecedented look at the fine details and 3D structure of the stuff between the stars.

The space between the stars is not empty, but rather filled with filaments of dust and gas (known as the interstellar medium), which is often invisible until something illuminates it.

Here, a long-ago supernova explosion, acting like a flashbulb, has heated some of this interstellar material, causing it to glow in the infrared, creating a thermal "light echo." As the supernova illumination travels through space at the speed of light, the echo appears to expand.

A full moon and Mars are the pair to spot tonight 👀

Tonight, Jan. 13, look up as the full moon cozies up to Mars. For skywatchers across the U.S. and Eastern Canada, the Moon will appear to pass in front of the Red Planet for a few hours as the pair rise into the eastern sky.

2024 was the warmest year on record.

Our experts work with NOAA scientists to track Earth’s average temperature, relying on millions of measurements worldwide. They found this year was hotter than any since at least 1880, the result of human activities.

Although there are slight variations from year to year and region to region, overall Earth has been experiencing a long-term warming trend. The past 10 years were the warmest 10 years on record: https://go.nasa.gov/4jpwf8X

In a post of NASA, it said that
📍South Africa

An astronaut on the International Space Station took this photo of Saldanha Bay and Langebaan Lagoon in the Western Cape province of South Africa. The Bay supports local communities through the export of goods and mineral resources, including 96% of South Africa’s iron ore.

Langebaan Lagoon, one of the few lagoons along South Africa’s coastline, is a shallow tidal estuary with no river flowing into it. The floor of the lagoon is a sand flat with tidal channels, visible as darker green meandering strands.

The color of the landscape indicates various types of land use. Much of the lighter-toned areas in the upper half of the image are agricultural fields where farmers grow crops such as corn, wheat, and olives. Townscapes such as Saldanha and Langebaan also appear light brown and gray. Darker surfaces in the lower part of the image indicate semi-desert shrubby vegetation. This natural vegetation has become reestablished within the West Coast National Park.

Our VIPER rover is heading to the Moon this year—and your name could be on it!

When VIPER lands at the lunar South Pole, it will roll over crater rims and explore the Moon's deep shadows for frozen water and other resources to sustain astronauts on future long-term missions. Sign up today and come along for the ride: http://www.nasa.gov/send-your-name-with-viper

Teamwork makes the dream work! ✨

An international team of astronomers has “wound back the clock” to help determine the timeline of a distant star’s demise using X-ray data from Chandra X-ray Observatory, optical data from NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, and infrared data from the retired Spitzer Space Telescope.

The distant star, located 160,000 light-years away in the Large Magellanic Cloud, exploded after reaching a critical mass, either by pulling matter from a neighboring star or by merging with another white dwarf.

By comparing Hubble images of the area from 2010, 2011, and 2020 the researchers measured the speeds of material in the blast wave from the explosion. They determined that light from the explosion likely would have reached Earth about 670 years ago.

The Mars Global Surveyor, launched in 1996, was the first successful mission to the Red Planet since the 1970s. 25 years ago today it reached Mars, and during its 9 years in orbit, the spacecraft discovered that Mars is still changing, as evidenced by newly formed boulder tracks and impact craters.
