Today is Earth Day 2021. In an interview in this week’s Big Issue, Greta Thunberg asks us to act now.⠀

“We can sit and do nothing and that may feel very hopeless, but as soon as we start taking action, there is hope. So that’s the mentality I’m trying to live off. And just imagine if we started to actually take action – I mean, we don’t know what that could lead to.” ⠀

We need “everyone to treat the climate crisic like a crisis. Right now.” ⠀
“Everyone counts.” ⠀
“It’s never too late to do as much as we possibly can.” ⠀
“No step in the right direction is too small.”⠀

So what can you do:⠀
“Stop focussing on dates, numbers and targets in the future and act now.”⠀

ACTIONS:⠀
Start a garden, however small⠀
Eat less meat⠀
Fly less, walk or cyle instead of jumping in your car⠀
Put pressure on people in power, lobby your local mp, right now. We need to create as much awareness as possible ahead of COP26 in September⠀
Spread awareness - if you make a change share it, it sends a clear message to people around you and is a key step to creating a critical mass

Today at 8.30pm, millions of people around the world will take one iconic action. They'll switch off their lights for one hour to show they care about the future of our planet - our shared home.⠀

Earth Hour’s switch-off reminds us that even small actions can make a big difference. Together, we can speak up for nature and build the momentum and public awareness needed to push world leaders into action.⠀

The scale of the issues facing our planet can only be solved if we unite. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of something big this Earth Hour - a symbol of power in collective action for nature.⠀

Less than 5% of the £1.5bn promised to householders in the government’s ‘Green Homes Grant Programme’ has been spent. This was meant to be a key plank in Boris Johnson’s November 2020 ‘Ten Point Plan for a Green Recovery’.⠀

Even more worrying is that the Treasury is likely to take this money back and not roll it over into 2021-22 spending. ⠀

Chris Hewett, chief executive of the trade association Solar Energy UK is alarmed “A year ago the chancellor put £2bn on the table and, as it stands, three-quarters of that is about to be taken away by the Treasury.” ⠀

Critics of the failure of the scheme also point to the contractors ICF, a large US consulting corporation. John Alker, director at the UK Green Building Council says “the problems with the scheme have not been about consumer appetite, but with the scheme’s administration.”⠀

ACTION: What can we do about this?⠀
Our MP’s are our representatives. If enough of us write to our MP asking them to ensure the money is allocated and a new administrator is found then the issue will have to be addressed in parliament.⠀

With so many of our natural habitats under threat it’s sometimes hard to feel that anything positive can be done. Examples where action has made a difference…⠀

Plantlife partnered with The Wildlife Trusts and Rare Breeds Survival Trust, to instigate the Coronation Meadows Project, to create wildflower meadows in as many counties in the UK as possible. .loveplants selected wildflower abundant donor meadows and then selected fields to create new, or improve existing, meadows. In 2019 they called on councils to turn road verges into wildflower meadows by cutting just once in late summer. ⠀

Rotherham Borough Council established eight miles of meadows alongside a motorway, saving £23,000 per year on mowing costs. 7 years on and a book has been launched to celebrate its achievements www.hugorittsonphotography.com⠀

is a campaign group that has researched how meadows can be encouraged in urban environments. It recommends cutting late to give flowers time to be pollinated, produce fruit and then set their seeds in the soil.⠀

Ranscombe Farm is .loveplants largest nature reserve in England of (250+ hectares (620+ acres); inc. arable farmland, ancient woodland and fragments of chalk grassland, and superb views.⠀

Up the Thames estuary towards London, Swanscombe Marshes is under threat. It’s one of only two places in the UK where you can find the critically endangered distinguished jumping spider (Attulus distinguendus). It’s home to nightingales, cuckoos, a thriving population of common lizards, the rare Marsh harrier, kestrel, lapwing, grey heron, ravens, dartford warblers and 1,992 species of invertebrates (more than any known site in the UK!). The RSPB says it’s “in urgent need of designating as an SSSI.”⠀

However, London Resort Company Holdings wants to build the ‘London Resort’, an entertainment resort on the Swanscombe Peninsula. Their Development Consent Order application was submitted on the 31st December 2020 and if granted, works will start in 2022, with an opening in 2024.⠀

The intent is to develop a theme park, waterpark, conference / convention centre and e-Sports facility, 3,500 hotel rooms, two ferry terminals and a new road. ⠀

Help save Swanscombe Marshes⠀

We all know in our bones we are facing a Climate Change Crisis and we need to do something about it. We know many people care about the big issues around biodiversity, nature, renewable energy. So having worked with GREAT (a campaign to Save Graveney Marshes in North Kent), managing their website and developing their social media channels, we have created Noise for Nature; a new portal to find out what more we can all do to protect nature and vital habitats in the UK. ⠀

This portal will help keep you up to speed with the latest challenges and threats and every time we post we’ll suggest simple, doable ‘actions’ so we can all make an impact. Help us build a community that cares and can make a difference! ⠀

Here’s our first ACTION -⠀
BE A NOISY NEIGHBOUR - let everyone you know about Noise for Nature. Please share widely!⠀

As we move towards COP 26 which will be hosted in Glasgow by the UK government Tim Schmidt, Eden Project reminds us this month ‘We’ve got to remember we are part of nature not apart from it.’⠀
