Charity bosses that preach dignity at work will sometimes try to pick the union that suits them. Funny how that works.
A sweetheart deal is when the employer signs with a compliant union to lock out the one workers are organising with, the one that can make the big wins. That’s recognition in name only. It's insulation dressed up to look like progress.
At IWGB we are seeing it now in a few workplaces.

If the deal came top-down and the boss looks pleased, you already know who it was built for!

🏳️‍⚧️ The new EHRC guidance is being used to justify anti-trans policies in workplaces across the sector. But guidance is not law & policies can be resisted.

This Thursday 9 July, 6.30pm (online), the D**e Project is facilitating a discussion for IWGB members from every branch: what the guidance actually says, what it means for trans workers and service users, and how to organise against anti-trans policies in your workplace. After this there will be time given over to the month branch business (just for members of the charity workers branch). All IWGB will be receiving the zoom link in their email, look out for it.

Charity workers are used as a cheaper alternative to public sector workers. This is policy, it hasn't come about by accident.

Austerity didn't create a gap. It created a market. The charity sector filled it.

Today, charities deliver £16.8bn of public services a year. The same work that used to come with nationally agreed pay, NHS-equivalent pensions, and union rights now comes with below-market wages, precarious contracts, and bosses that might sack you if your politics don't fit.

Charities have won the majority of commissioned homelessness services, domestic violence support, and disability provision. Not because they're better resourced. Because they're cheaper. Workers cover the shortfall with their wages and their futures.

If you work in the charity sector, in service provision, you are doing public sector work. You deserve public sector protections.

The IWGB Charity Workers Branch exists because this gap isn't inevitable, it's the result of choices made by bosses and funders and governments. Choices that can be changed through organising. Decisions that can be unmade.

We've won reinstatements. We've beaten disciplinaries. We're building.

We're screening Sitting Tight: The Story of the Lee Jeans Sit-In. The story of 240 women who occupied their factory for seven months rather than accept redundancy.

Charity Workers AGM! this Saturday - and we want you there.
This is the meeting where members shape the branch: electing officers for 2026-27, hearing from workplaces about how they won this year, and meeting the branch's new organisers. If you've been a member for a while and haven't made it to many meetings, this is the one to come to.

The past year has included new recognition agreements, anti-redundancy campaigns, BDS wins, and the Organisers Network and Members Solidarity Network. None of it happened overnight. All of it was built by members organising across the branch.

After the formal AGM we're sticking around at Pelican House: food, drinks, and games from 6pm. Come for the meeting, stay for the rest.

The government's proposed 'earned settlement status' changes are an attack on workers. Immigrant workers built this union. We're not standing by.
On 12th March, journalist and author of Work Won't Love You Back joins our Charity Workers Branch meeting. She was on the ground in Minneapolis when workers and unions organised against ICE raids and drove a General Strike on 23rd January. She's bringing that story to us.

Then we ask: what does that mean for us here? How do we fight back against earned settlement status and protect the workers who built and run this union?

When our member Chloe was sacked for her Palestine solidarity, we fought and we won. She got her job back.
That's what collective organisation looks like.
