Here’s a few of our crew hard at work making the living dead hedge at the last eco gathering 💚✨👌 we’ll be by the river this Saturday for April’s gathering, 11-1pm, tending to the trees, marvelling at all the new spring growth, picking up litter, chatting and eating cake! Come and join us 💕

Create a living dead hedge
At the monthly eco gathering

Join us for a special eco gathering this month, creating a living ‘dead hedge’ for fungi, lichens and mosses to take root, a shelter for wildlife, and a rich food source for invertebrates.

At this time of year we can really see all facets of the life cycle, with all the dead matter of winter slowly decomposing with the rain, as new green shoots poke through the leaf mulch. Creating a living dead hedge is a beautiful way to embrace and witness the new life that decay and decomposition supports, making use of woody clippings to create a new space for biodiverse life to flourish.

💚Eco Boat Fund: Revive Channelsea Waters💚

After 8 years of service and many loving repairs, our faithful boat has finally become irreparable. We’ve been unsuccessful with a couple of funds last year, but we’re really keen to continue our work on the river tackling the pennywort so we’ve launched our first ever crowd funder to buy a new eco boat that will last a lifetime!

So it’s time to reach out to you our community and ask for donations.

We’ve been given a kick start by the Aspers foundation but we need to raise the rest over the next few weeks in order to make use of their gift.

If you’ve ever been to an eco gathering and enjoyed a slice of accessible cake and a good chat, if you ever walk past and enjoy the apple trees growing steadily along the path, or appreciate the litter being kept under control, or if you’ve been involved in any of our free creative conservation activities on the river, then please contribute whatever is possible for you, even £1 will help! And share widely with friends and family!

If you are able to donate £200 or more we will thank you with a boat trip from the Channelsea to the Thames and back.

Our first eco gathering of the year is this Saturday 7th February! We will have the team from .lul with us again and will be co-creating a display of beautiful illustrations from the ‘Sensemaking Stewardship’ tool that we’ve been working on together over the past few months, and launched at our event last weekend. Plus of course the usual litter pick and tidy up, there’s lots of weeding to do around the orchard trees, and some winter pruning. See you there! Link to sign up in bio…

SAVE THE DATE - Saturday 31st January!
Special celebratory ‘Sensemaking Stewardship’ event in collaboration with the .lul team at Loughborough University London, bringing together the threads we’ve been weaving through our on-going collaboration to grow ecological stewardship in practice. More info coming soon…!

Loughborough University’s EcoLandS team collaborates with Surge Coop with the support of an EPSRC-funded grant as part of the Royal College of Art’s Ecological Citizen(s) Network +.

For the last eco gathering of the year we came together to make wreaths from river willow and celebrate the still green plants, gathering and winding them around our willow circles, reminding us of life’s cycles. 💚
Many thanks to all who’ve joined us for an eco gathering this year. We won’t be meeting on 3rd Jan so the next eco gathering is 7th Feb, and we’re planning a special event on the 31st January so keep a look out for that!

Our monthly eco gathering is tomorrow! From 11-1pm, dress for the weather! We’ll be tending to the site, thinking about next year, doing some tidying and as always litter picking.
