We’re excited to welcome back the team behind Insola for a FREE workshop on the banks of the Channelsea river to explore the ‘Floating Commons’, part of the ‘Water Chronicles’ project lead by artists and Surge members Blanc Sceol

Architects .forestiero & Fiete Wulff will lead this hands-on workshop that invites participants to imagine and build small floating models, vessels, and rafts using simple materials: sticks, corks, string, branches, leaves, and other lightweight elements.

Working individually or in small groups, participants will experiment with how these materials can come together to create places that float, connect, gather, move, or offer shelter. The aim is to explore, through physical scale models, how we might create floating commons: spaces on the water, shaped by the water, and made for people.

River Rights lecture & workshop
At Loughborough University East campus, Stratford

We are collaborating with the Climate Ecological Transitions Hub at Loughborough University London (L*L) for a River Rights Charter event with the River Rights Network, as part of ’s London Rivers Week 2026, for a lecture and hands-on workshop to explore the development of a River Rights Charter for the Channelsea Creek.

We will be exploring the potential for a Rights of Rivers approach with a specific focus on the Channelsea community, getting inspired with practical examples, to develop a greater sense of connection with the river and assess the feasibility of developing a Rights for Rivers approach for other rivers. We’ll be joined by from the group.

17 councils in the UK have now recognised local rivers as having rights under the law, which is an amazing achievement for the network and all those who’ve been campaigning around this subject for years. This weekend is our eco gathering on the Channelsea river at the Long Wall Ecology garden. We’ll be installing a live stream box on the roof of the compost toilet to join REVEIL #13 - a live stream of the dawn chorus as it travels around the globe curated by - our stream will be broadcast at dawn on Sunday.
There’ll also be lots of comfrey to cut for mulch for the trees, weeding, tidying, litter picking, chatting and tea drinking! Come along - link with info in our bio 🌱

Here’s a few of our crew hard at work making the living dead hedge at the last eco gathering 💚✨👌 we’ll be by the river this Saturday for April’s gathering, 11-1pm, tending to the trees, marvelling at all the new spring growth, picking up litter, chatting and eating cake! Come and join us 💕

Create a living dead hedge
At the monthly eco gathering

Join us for a special eco gathering this month, creating a living ‘dead hedge’ for fungi, lichens and mosses to take root, a shelter for wildlife, and a rich food source for invertebrates.

At this time of year we can really see all facets of the life cycle, with all the dead matter of winter slowly decomposing with the rain, as new green shoots poke through the leaf mulch. Creating a living dead hedge is a beautiful way to embrace and witness the new life that decay and decomposition supports, making use of woody clippings to create a new space for biodiverse life to flourish.

💚Eco Boat Fund: Revive Channelsea Waters💚

After 8 years of service and many loving repairs, our faithful boat has finally become irreparable. We’ve been unsuccessful with a couple of funds last year, but we’re really keen to continue our work on the river tackling the pennywort so we’ve launched our first ever crowd funder to buy a new eco boat that will last a lifetime!

So it’s time to reach out to you our community and ask for donations.

We’ve been given a kick start by the Aspers foundation but we need to raise the rest over the next few weeks in order to make use of their gift.

If you’ve ever been to an eco gathering and enjoyed a slice of accessible cake and a good chat, if you ever walk past and enjoy the apple trees growing steadily along the path, or appreciate the litter being kept under control, or if you’ve been involved in any of our free creative conservation activities on the river, then please contribute whatever is possible for you, even £1 will help! And share widely with friends and family!
