This programme, designed by young migrants for young migrants, has transformed the lives of hundreds of young people. πŸ™Œ

After running for 10 years, even during COVID, the Emerging Young Leaders programme has supported 132 young people in developing their leadership styles and forging their stories of self.

What started as a response to fill the gaps left by the lack of access to opportunities for young people who were blocked from entering university or employment because of their immigration status has now become a pillar in We Belong's services in supporting young people.

Since then, the course has transformed into a fully CPD-accredited course designed to develop young migrants' strengths and leadership styles, focusing on skills such as leadership theories, power and negotiation, resilience and vulnerability.

We Belong had the privilege of attending The Justice Together Initiative's Festival of Sharing in York! β˜€οΈ

This event brought together charities, legal support, frontline workers, campaigners, and community leaders to connect and exchange knowledge and solidarity in supporting migrants and building justice in the UK immigration system.

Our Youth Development Officer, Lizzie Etti, along with Campaigns Working Group members Abdullahi, Milana, and Ghazal, delivered a workshop on Youth Leadership and Lived Experience.

They discussed the impact of young people transitioning from being subjects of decisions to becoming leaders in making those decisions.

Each of them reflected on their own journeys, emphasising the value of lived experience leadership and why young people should be trusted not only to contribute but also to actively shape the decisions that affect them. πŸ’ͺ

They reiterated a key message: Lived experience isn't a vulnerability; it's expertise.

A huge thank you to our members for empowering other young people and organisations in the sector with your expertise. πŸ™Œ

Be sure to continue following their journey as part of our Campaigns Working Group βš–οΈ and the Migrant Moods podcast! πŸŽ™οΈ

No young person should fall through the cracks. πŸ™…πŸΎβ€β™‚οΈ

Patrick's experience highlights the complexity of the immigration system, especially for care-experienced young people.

Young people and children shouldn't face an exorbitant price tag just to access legal advice and representation. βš–οΈ

However, barriers to support, also called 'legal aid deserts,' mean there is often limited legal support available, with reduced capacity and long waiting lists. πŸ’Ό

The only other option is private legal support. This is often extremely expensive, and even reaching a law centre can be costly due to transportation fees. 🚌

Resolving your immigration status is crucial. It is what gives you the right to work, study, rent, and plan for your future. Immigration support should be embedded in the care plans for children and young people in care, as well as those leaving care.

This would help prevent young people from leaving the care system and facing hardships that prevent them from moving on with their lives.

If you or someone you know is an experienced care leaver who has navigated the care system while resolving immigration status, we would like to hear from you.

By sharing your story, you can help raise awareness about the challenges faced and encourage local authorities and the Home Office to engage with young people to find better ways to support them.
