Among the 100 highest grossing films for 2023, 2024 and 2025, six films featured someone called Chris as the lead actor compared to just five featuring women over 60 as the lead character.

“Sadly, it is not just in cinema where this happens. In many forms of media, in many different employment sectors and parts of public life, the input of older women is minimised, marginalised and ignored. We must all push back against ageism, and its intersection with sexism, by telling the cultural gatekeepers that we want all aspects and stages of life represented in the things we watch, listen to and read.” Says our Chief Executive, Dr Carole Easton OBE.

It's Age Without Limits Day!

Today is all about questioning common assumptions about age and ageing, because when we question ageism, we challenge it. And the more we challenge it, the more we start to change it.

If you're looking for last minute ways to get involved, you could:

- Share one of our posts and add your own thoughts about what questioning ageism means to you, or choose an ageist stereotype (like 'can't teach an old dog new tricks') and share why you want to challenge it.

- Talk to your friends, family and neighbours about ageing and ageism! Use our handy conversation starters on our website for some prompts and questions like, 'what do we mean when we say ‘act your age‘?' and 'Why do we say ‘you look good for your age‘? Why not just ‘you look good’?'

If you're hosting an event today or this week, we can't wait to see what you get up to! Make sure to tag Age Without Limits and use the hashtag , and thank you so much for getting involved. Together, we can create a future free from ageism.

"During this time, I have to boil a kettle, carry it upstairs, have our bath… I was going through hell.”

This testimony is a stark reminder that when housing support is fragmented, people can be left navigating crisis alone - with real impacts on health, finances and wellbeing.

Like Victoria, who had live in a home without a working boiler for 12 weeks.

It’s exactly why developing a Good Home Hub matters. Stories like this show why support needs to be built around people, not fragmented services.

Seven locations have recently been proposed by the government as sites for new towns. These could contribute between 70,000 and 280,000 new homes towards their manifesto commitment of 1.5 million housebuilding target.

But with a growing ageing population, these towns must be constructed along age-friendly guidelines if they are to be fit for the future, says our Head of Communities, Charlotte Lewis.

As the Transport for New Homes campaign, among others, has pointed out, new housing estates are often not in proximity to other estates or existing towns, which makes bus route planning difficult, adding to journey times and making routes unappealing.

“I retired when I was 60 years of age, and I knew I needed to put something back into the community,” says Tony.

“I decided to run a social support group for people who are LGBT+ over 50 years of age. We support each other. We have meetings each week. We have trips out.”

“It is a lifeline. It’s changed my life,” adds Norman.

Tony and Norman took part in a photo and film shoot with so that their images could be included in our age-positive photo library.

“I’d like to see images of older gay people so that we can recognise ourselves in the characters. If you see positive images, I think it improves life, makes life better for people. It’s just, you know, a fantastic thing to do,” says Tony.

Representation matters. At the start of , take a look at our photo collection called Ageing with Pride, in our free-to-download, age-positive image library.

We’re calling for an independent commissioner to champion the rights of older people and ensure policymaking considers the needs of England's ageing population.

We have an ageing population, but there is no overall strategy to prepare for the complex social and policy challenges that this will generate.
