RadHR.org

RadHR.org A free, open, collaborative library of radical HR & operations policies. But things are shifting!

RadHR is a space for social change organisations to share the nuts and bolts—the policies, processes, practices and stories —of how to organise ourselves based on our values and challenge oppression within our groups. Most activist groups, not-for-profit organisations, community groups, workers’ cooperatives and social enterprises are committed to fighting against oppression and inequality in the

wider world. But when it comes to how we organise internally, we often end up replicating all sorts of crap—classist, racist, sexist, ableist, homophobic and transphobic norms, as well as the individualistic, competition-based values of the wider systems we oppose. In the wake of BLM and , social justice organisations have started acknowledging that the ends don’t always justify the means – and that we can’t keep organising in oppressive, top-down ways and expect a better world to emerge. RadHR helps groups to challenge these damaging practices and become more supportive, caring and anti-oppressive organisations.

Great day with the team in , outside , doing an 'introduction to radical HR' workshop! We don't do a lot of work with individual organisations like this, but we'd never had a chance to work with a museum before and this lot are very keen to be bringing radical policy making to other museums, as they reshape all of their own internal policies and processes to reflect the values that the museum was founded upon. It was also the first test run for the IRL version of the 'Policy Prioritisation Bulls Eye', which used over 100 post it notes, but succeded in helping get the team to a clear sense of what they needed to focus on, when! (The online version of the Bulls Eye is free on the Meeting Templates page of the website).

Sending huge gratitude to the dozens of folks who were a part of the first Police Hivemind Hack Day last week at with ! Thank you to everyone who came together, bringing yourselves, your journeys and your perspectives to the table in sharing the messy realities that come with trying to do radical internal policy making. It felt good to be a part of another step to collectivise this work, beyond the specific contexts of each of our little groups, orgs and collectives! More to come in terms of sharing what we created together and figuring out if we will be doing similar events in the future! And feel free to tag yourself or your org into the pics!

Paying eachother inequitably is not inevitable - even if it's still the norm. After our last , 'What does socially-just pay actually mean?', we realised that is still a very new concept for many of us. So we made this video. We've also published a reflections blog from the event, a longer video with , , and input from , around each organisations' experiences of socially-just pay, and a list of resources we've made or compiled to help groups figure out their own more-equitable . CHECK THE LINK IN OUR BIO AND SHARE THIS VIDEO WITH SOMEONE YOU THINK MIGHT LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT SOCIALLY-JUST PAY!

Can pay be just? How does equity relate to salary? Should different life circumstances, identities or experiences shape what we earn, more than our job titles? Join us (), , and on Thurs 23 October (6-8pm), for our 2nd event, ‘What does 'socially-just pay' actually mean?’ exploring what equitable pay policies can look like, with groups who have been using them.

Working on a prototype of some radical policy making prompt cards for the (first ever!) RadHR in-person meet up in London next Weds evening (tix in bio link). What's the best question you've been asked to help you rethink a trad organisational policy? Or what's the thing you wished had been flagged that you forgot to include in a first version of a policy? The current themes are just a start and eventually we'll design up a real deck that includes a lot more policy areas (and which are easier to read than Liam's scrawl).

Conventional grievance & disciplinary policies fail at many of their own metrics, often antagonising conflicts, and treating them as far more black-and-white than they actually are.

If we want to think about addressing harm, increasing accountability, and making space for deeper understanding and repair between colleagues and comrades, standard grievance and disciplinary policies are about the worst place we could start from!

All of that said, it can be hard to translate the values around abolitionism and non-punitive accountability from community and activist spaces, to more formal organisational practices. We've given it a go though!

Feel free to check out the new 'Conflict, Grievance and Accountability' policy and process we've recently agreed and shared in the RadHR Library and let us know what your experiences of trying to address harm and/or conflict within your organisation have been.

So much wisdom in 's , on the relationships between transforming individual trauma and shifting wider systems of political power and oppression. The focus on relationships feels like the place many of our social change organisations can and must hold the tension between supporting change in individuals and pushing for wider systems grounded in justice. Otherwise we too easily end up reinforcing wider systems grounded in the values of the status quo. "I sounds big, but like everything, it starts small."
