Our next group of team members have travelled to to support Kijana Kwanza (English) and gain a deeper understanding of their life-changing work.

After arriving at International Airport, they group began their visit by spending time with the children at Shabaha Childrenโ€™s Home, whose construction SBCH was proud to support. The evening provided an opportunity to meet some of the dedicated volunteers and staff who make such a difference to the childrenโ€™s lives, before sharing a meal and getting to know one another.

The following day began with the chance to sample a range of foods, including ugali and freshly made fruit juices โ€“ with mango proving to be a firm favourite! In the afternoon, the group accompanied Social Workers on visits to local families and the children in their care, gaining valuable insight into the support provided within the .

That evening, they were invited to attend a traditional wedding, enjoying an unforgettable cultural experience. Given a warm welcome, the group joined the , and danced in procession as they presented gifts to the bride and groom!

Our team joined on home visits where they were warmly welcomed by nine families. Seeing first-hand the challenges these families face โ€“ and the resilience with which they meet them โ€“ highlighted just how vital KKโ€™s work is in this community. A sharing how their life has been transformed through KKโ€™s support was especially powerful.

Later, they visited Chemka before sharing a meal prepared with fresh produce from the KK farm.

The next morning was spent at Kariwa, where our team joined the children in volleyball, tug of war, basketball and cards. A standout moment was learning a game they had created using a sock ball โ€“ a simple yet powerful reminder of the childrenโ€™s resourcefulness and the joy they find in everyday moments.

That evening, they returned to Shabaha for an emotional farewell, filled with dancing, speeches, gifts and a shared meal. It felt less like goodbye and more like โ€œsee you soonโ€.

It was a truly life-changing week, leaving the team deeply grateful and inspired by KKโ€™s impact on vulnerable .

Weโ€™re also incredibly proud of Abs, who reached the summit of and personally raised over ยฃ1,400 for KK โ€“ contributing to a team total of more than ยฃ6,300 for this expedition. We have two further expeditions planned for this year, with our next cohort departing in June, so stay tuned for further updates!

Our team spent another inspiring day in centred around collaboration, learning, and sharing practice with .
ย
They took part in a range of training sessions exchanging knowledge, and comparing approaches with our work in the UK including HR, operations, , and . Social work sessions focused on care planning and key working, supporting holistic development, and ensuring remain at the centre of care at all times.
ย
We were particularly inspired by KKโ€™s commitment to keeping young people engaged in education despite limited resources, and by how every young person is supported to pursue their aspirations. Their approach also focuses on helping young people transition into self-employment and after their studies.
ย
KK also shared how activities such as singing and exercise are used to support bonding and wellbeing. A return visit to Shabaha School included an interactive session delivered by our team on teaching emotions in English and linking them to Swahili, followed by arts and crafts, where bracelets and keyrings were made using scoubidou.
ย
The day ended with cake to celebrate Millieโ€™s birthday - a perfect way to round things off!ย If you would like to learn more or support KK, please visit:ย www.kijanakwanza.enthuse.com/pf/sbchl-2026.
