It was great to be at the Senedd yesterday to launch the Dog People’s Manifesto.

We were pleased to meet newly elected Members of the Senedd and talk about the key dog welfare issues affecting dogs and their owners across Wales.

It was a great opportunity to share our policy asks, start new conversations, and build relationships that can help make a real difference for dogs in Wales.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the stand and showed their support.

Ever wondered what’s behind a breed’s name?

Some are more than just names. They can offer little clues to a breed’s history, homeland and original purpose.

Take the Border Collie. “Border” refers to the Anglo-Scottish border region where the breed developed, while “Collie” is a Scots term long associated with working sheepdogs.

The Dalmatian is named after Dalmatia, the historic region along Croatia’s Adriatic coast.

And the Shiba Inu offers another fascinating example. “Shiba” is often linked to brushwood, possibly connected to the terrain the breed hunted in or its reddish coat, while “Inu” simply means dog in Japanese.

Many breed names carry clues to their origins, reflecting the places, languages and purposes that helped shape them.

June is National Microchipping Month and a perfect reminder to check that your dog’s microchip details are up to date.

Microchipping is one of the easiest ways to help reunite lost dogs with their owners, giving pets the best chance of getting home safely if they ever go missing.

With Petlog, millions of pets across the country are registered and protected.

Remember, dogs must legally be microchipped by eight weeks old - and keeping your contact details updated is just as important if anything changes.

Find out more about microchipping and keeping your dog safe on the Petlog website: https://www.petlog.org.uk/

On a hot day, frozen treats, ice cubes, or ice in your dog’s water can be a simple and effective way to help them cool down and in most cases, they’re perfectly safe when given with a little care.

Very hard ice can, in rare cases, chip teeth, particularly in dogs with existing dental issues, and there is a small risk of choking with larger pieces. To reduce this, opt for smaller ice cubes or slightly softened frozen treats and always supervise your dog while they enjoy them. For dogs with dental concerns, frozen treats can even be blended into a slushie for easier eating.
