Bail for Immigration Detainees

Bail for Immigration Detainees BID provides legal advice for individuals held under immigration powers in removal centres and prisons in the UK to help secure their release from detention

BID is an independent charity that exists to challenge immigration detention. We have a telephone helpline open four days a week (0207 456 9750) and also provide legal advice and information sessions in detention centres and prisons to give detainees to tools to make their own applications for release. We represent some of the most vulnerable individuals ourselves, including survivors of torture a

nd trafficking, people with mental or physical health problems and parents separated from their children. We also carry out research and use this and evidence from our legal casework to push for changes to detention policy and practice. Where we believe clients’ detention is unlawful we refer the cases to other lawyers, who work on a pro-bono basis, to mount unlawful detention challenges against the Home Office.

Happy International Women’s Day 💜

This is Nzinga’s* vision of strength, faith, community, and the future she refuses to give up on.

After more than three decades of waiting and surviving, with the support of her community, she finally has her security and is able to dream big. This is her vision for tomorrow.

This video accompanies our research with , , and , which evidences the experiences of thousands of families navigating long and complex deportation proceedings.

It shows how children’s voices, needs, and perspectives are often missing from decisions leading to the deportation of a parent.

Want to run to help end detention?

We have limited charity places available to run the SOLD OUT Hackney Half Marathon on 17 May for Bail for Immigration Detainees.

If you are concerned about increasingly hostile immigration policy, this is practical way to take action.

Every step you take will be in solidarity with people held in immigration detention, where research shows access to legal advice is at an all-time low.

By running for BID and raising funds for our free legal advice line, you will help make sure people in detention can get the advice they need to apply for bail.

We answer over 7,000 calls to our advice line each year from people in detention. With new detention centres opening, demand for our support is only increasing.

Help us be there at the end of the phone, providing expert legal advice when it is needed most.

Nine UN experts have formally written to the UK Government, raising evidence of possible human rights violations linked to the UK France “one in, one out” deal.

Since the scheme began, we have represented 100 people seeking sanctuary who were detained for removal to France, including children, survivors of torture and trafficking, and people experiencing suicidal distress.

These are people who have made brave and arduous journeys to escape unimaginable horrors. Many are highly vulnerable, have strong asylum claims, and would previously have been granted protection.

This must never become the new normal.

We urge the government to respond to the UN experts’ letter by scrapping this inhumane scheme, which risks further human rights violations.

Experts identify potentially serious breaches over treatment of people and call for ‘one in, one out’ scheme to end

Thinking of people in detention today and every day. We wish you freedom. 🕊️

This season, our team has been working hard to support those hoping to reunite with family in time for Christmas. Some people got out in time, but the children of others will wake up this morning with a parent detained under immigration powers.

Today and always, we send strength and solidarity to everyone experiencing and resisting inhumane immigration policies.

🖋️ Just landed - a must-read article in the Big Issue by our former client, in response to the High Court ruling about the Home Office failing to protect vulnerable people in detention this week.

"This High Court ruling confirms what those of us who have lived through detention already know: the system is broken. Vulnerable people are ignored, medical care is inadequate, legal safeguards exist only on paper, and despair is used to force people out of the UK. Until detention is ended, people will continue to be broken physically, mentally, and emotionally, only for the majority to be released back into the community traumatised."

Malachi, a vulnerable migrant, was held in an immigration detention centre by the Home Office. They say they were treated like an animal.

The High Court has found what we have long known - that the Home Office failed to protect vulnerable people in detention, breaching their duty under Article 3 ECHR to prevent inhuman and degrading treatment.

The judge ruled that the systems in place to protect people from such treatment have been failing for multiple years. Sadly, we are not surprised.

Through our Adults at Risk Project, we work daily with people with mental health illnesses who are locked up for 23 hours, and others who are on constant su***de watch yet have not even had their detention reviewed.

Detaining people for immigration reasons is inherently inhumane, and this important judgment provides clear evidence that the safeguard system is not fit for purpose.

The only solution to protect people from the harms of detention is to end its use and enable people to be supported within their communities.

Judgement finds systems designed to protect against inhuman and degrading treatment ‘unlawfully’ failing for years
