Starting the day reviewing news on this morning, on the breakfast show with today’s host- Michael Fanstone. This morning we considered the ethics and fairness of the Southampton football spy scandal, the Ebola outbreak in Uganda and DRC and the record 274 climbers who climbed the summit of Mt Everest in Nepal yesterday.

Today at Saraswati School in Nepal, one of our Education PLUS partner schools, I was reminded how change in education really happens.

UWS Education PLUS is about strengthening quality, not just access - working with existing government schools to support teachers, school leaders and communities so learning improves and endures.

Just over a year in, the progress here is already visible. Teachers and community members spoke about higher motivation, better attendance and registration, and stronger relationships with students.

Walking through classrooms, you could feel the shift. Some spaces are already vibrant and engaging, reflecting teachers putting new training into practice. Others are still finding their way - and that honesty matters. Real change takes time.

A real highlight was meeting our UWS Fellow, the brilliant Santu. Selected through a rigorous process, Fellows support schools for two years, teaching specialist subjects, strengthening the school environment, and building strong community connections.

There’s more to do, but it’s really clear this school is moving forward, together.

First day of the school year at Peluwa School, high on a mountain in Nepal.
Tuesday was a day of firsts.
>The first day back at school.
>The very first day of school ever for some children.
>And the first time Peluwa School has welcomed visitors from outside Nepal.

After five and a half hours on some of the toughest roads you can imagine, we arrived at a school full of energy, pride and hope – a school supported by the inspiring network of friends at UWS Singapore.

We saw science, maths, English and Nepali lessons in action. We watched children learning through play on the swings and playground. And we met an incredible mothers’ group leading change in their community – from preventing early marriage and domestic violence, to supporting children, teachers and one another with real solidarity.

With strong support from school leaders, ward and municipality representatives, it really felt like a powerful first step into a brand new school year. That first‑day feeling wasn’t just for the students – it was for all of us.

A reminder that even in the most remote places, education is a catalyst for change.

This is how we move closer to Zero Education Poverty.

Partnership in Action
It was a privilege to meet with the honourable Surendra Kumar Udas, Mayor of Shadananda Municipality, Bhojpur today to discuss our shared vision for the future of education in the region.

There is something uniquely powerful about sitting down with a leader who doesn't just see education as a policy goal, but as a lifelong calling - a perspective he carries from his 24 years as a secondary school teacher and head teacher.

Our conversation centered on one word: Partnership.
In Nepal, this municipality was the birthplace of the Tripartite Agreement, a model involving the local government, UWS, and the community. This framework is now the standard for our operations across the country ( and in the other countries UWS exists in) ensuring that every school is built on a foundation of mutual investment and long-term commitment.

What struck me most was the Mayor’s insistence on the local government’s financial and strategic commitment and dedication to resourcing and supporting education. From co-funding teacher salaries to investing in school mobilisers, they are demonstrating that true sustainability happens when local leadership takes the reins.

In fact, they have even begun funding mobilisers for schools outside the UWS Nepal network because they’ve seen the tangible impact on student engagement and community mobilisation.

We spoke deeply about how education is the frontline of defense against broader social challenges. By keeping children in school and engaged, we aren't just teaching literacy; we are actively working to:
- Prevent early marriage and protect childhood.
- Address child protection issues and domestic violence through mothers groups.
- Combat the rising pressures of social media that impact youth mental health through development of specific awareness raising activities.

When local government, communities, and NGOs align their resources and their hearts, the potential for transformation is limitless. Thank you, Mr. Mayor, for your passion, your history as an educator, and your continued championship of the children of Nepal.

Together, we are doing more than building schools we are facilitating a safer and flourishing future for the children of the this community, today and tomorrow.

After a welcome break in cloud cover, it was good to make it to Tumlingtar in the east of Nepal, to begin our visits to communities and schools in Sankhuwasabha and Bhojpur. It was a privilege to spend some time with the committed regional team here, getting to know them, answering questions, hearing about their work and the impact they are making through relationship with the communities and dozens of schools in this wide region.

When teachers grow, students thrive!

Through our Teacher Professional Development Training, we're not just training educators—we're transforming learning experiences for children in remote regions.
Our goal is to train all teachers in the municipalities we work in, and so far, we've reached 457 teachers, providing them with an average of 41 hours of training to ensure quality education for every child.

Here’s what Surendra Kumar Udas, Mayor of Shadananda Municipality, has to say about the impact of our training!

Did you know? We're working in 64 government schools in Cambodia and Nepal, supporting thousands more children in receiving quality primary education.

By strengthening teaching, supporting school leaders, and working closely with local communities, we are hoping to tackle the greatest barrier in education. Not the lack of school buildings, but low learning outcomes in schools that already exist.

This is how we’re working towards a world with
