Letting late summer weeds grow could help honeybees when they find it most challenging to gather nectar.

In a novel study that directly measured seasonal changes in the energy honeybees expend and gain from foraging, researchers from the University of Sussex found that honeybees find it hardest to forage for nectar in late summer, particularly in August.

They suggest that this is likely due to fewer flowers in bloom in late summer and a higher number of active pollinators competing for these flowers.

“Late summer is likely challenging for other species of flower-visiting insects because honeybees visit a large variety of flower species. This means that they’re a good indicator of overall availability of nectar in the landscape.” said Dr Ciaran harris Harris, lead author of the study.

In the study, the researchers directly observed honeybees foraging at sites across Brighton and Edinburgh, including Arthur’s Seat, The Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh and Falmer village from April to October.

One of the biggest challenges facing ecologists today is understanding ecosystems that have never existed before.

England and Wales have just experienced their driest July on record, wildfires have swept across Europe and species are on the move. We are living in a novel future, one with ecosystems that have no historical precedent.

Understanding novel futures is a challenge we identified as a research priority in our Future of Ecological Research in the UK report back in 2023 �https://www.britishecologicalsociety.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/BES_Future_of_Ecological_Research_Report.pdf

So we're delighted to see the launch of the £25m+ NERC and Defra RESET programme, which recognises the need and opportunity of researching novel futures. The programme will support research into how ecosystem change affects resilience, security and prosperity.

Understanding and responding to novel futures will be one of the defining challenges for ecological research in the coming decades and we encourage BES members to apply to the RESET programme.
