🖤 THE HANDS THAT BUILT CROYDON - DEBORAH KLASS TALKS TO COMMUNITY LEADER CHRIS BARRETT🖤

A Portrait Exhibition by The Windrush Generation Legacy Association

This Black History Month 2026, we are proud to present “The Hands That Built Croydon” — a powerful portrait exhibition honouring the people whose resilience, talent, hard work and love have shaped our community.

These are the hands that built our homes, our businesses, our families and our future. They belong to the everyday heroes — the individuals, families and community groups across Croydon who continue to make a real difference, day after day.

✨ OUR COMMUNITY — Celebrating those making a difference across our borough

✨ OUR STORIES — Sharing real stories of resilience, achievement and impact

✨ GET INVOLVED — We welcome new volunteers! Come join us and be part of something meaningful

Together, these hands reflect the spirit, diversity and strength of Croydon’s Black community — and the vital role we all play in helping our community to do better and be better.

There are many more stories to tell. This is just the beginning. 🤝

🕊️IN LOVING MEMORY — GENE ELSIE BOVELL 🕊️

From all of us at WGLA — Windrush Generation Legacy Association 🖤

“A beautiful life will never be forgotten.

On Wednesday 9th September, Gene Bovell, a much loved member of our WGLA family, was laid to rest.

We were deeply saddened by the passing of our dear member, Gene Elsie Bovell, who will be fondly remembered by all who knew her through WGLA.

She was Kind, Generous, Caring, Inspiring — a true friend.

Her warmth, her spirit, and her contribution to our community will always be remembered.

Forever in our hearts 💛

*Together we remember. Together we support. Together we continue her legacy.”

🎉 NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL — 60 YEARS: WHERE STRUGGLE BECAME SONG 🎶

60 years. A diamond jubilee. But Carnival was never just a party — it was an act of resistance, survival, and love. 💛

Born from the courage of Claudia Jones, Rhaune Laslett, Russell Henderson & the Windrush generation — it began as a voice for those unheard, and grew into Europe’s greatest street festival. 2 million people, £400m impact, and still the same heartbeat: we are here, we belong, and we will celebrate. 🇯🇲🇬🇧

This anniversary isn’t just about looking back — it’s about handing the torch forward. Carnival evolves, but its soul remains: joy as resistance, community as strength, our culture as our greatest gift.
