This is a great explanation of a retrospective study that shows lower bio markers for Alzheimer’s in women on oestrogen replacement therapy from one of the world’s leading researchers in menopause and brain health, Prof Pauline Maki who is also a gynaecologist .maki
The study itself, which compared those on estrogen only against those who hadn’t used it, states it doesn’t show causality and can’t be generalized.

And as Dr Maki points out it doesn’t take into account all the confounding factors - the fact that women taking hormone replacement tend to be healthier and better educated to start with, meaning they are at lower risk straight away.

So, does it mean you have a 35% lower risk if you take oestrogen only (which doesn’t apply to those of us with a uterus )- unfortunately no. This looked at biomarkers, not risk.

And, the randomized trials don’t show that. This may change over time but at the moment that’s not what they’re showing for the general population.

So, this study gives us good for thought but doesn’t prove taking oestrogen only will reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s.

Social media has made discussions about menopause more open than ever, which is a positive development. However, with so much information available, it can be challenging to distinguish between what is backed by evidence and what is based solely on personal experience.

Evidence-based research is crucial for healthcare professionals to develop guidelines that reflect the best available science. Ongoing investment in menopause research is vital for improving understanding, treatment, and care for women now and in the future.

Where do you typically find information about menopause? Tell us in the comments.

Every conversation based on evidence helps us move forward. To learn more about our work and the significance of menopause research, visit mref.uk.

Meet the people behind MREF.

Menopause matters because women’s health matters. Behind the Menopause Research and Education Fund is a dedicated group of Trustees bringing together experience across clinical care, research, education, journalism and advocacy.

Together, they share a commitment to strengthening the evidence around menopause and improving understanding of its impact on long-term health, quality of life and the workplace.

Their work reflects something simple: better menopause care starts with better evidence. That means supporting research, encouraging informed conversations and helping build the knowledge women and healthcare professionals need.

We’re proud to introduce the people helping shape MREF’s mission. Learn more about our Trustees and our work at mref.uk/about-us/

We'd love to hear from you.

If you're comfortable, send us a one-minute video sharing why menopause research matters to you. It could be something you wish you'd known before perimenopause or menopause, something you're struggling with today, or a question you wish research could answer.

With your permission, we'll share selected videos because every story helps build understanding, raise awareness, and highlight why evidence-based menopause research deserves greater attention and funding.

Your voice could help someone else feel seen and help shape the conversations that lead to better research.

Send your video by DM or email us at [email protected].

Together, we can make sure more voices are heard and help create a future where menopause is better understood through research.

Menopause looks different for every woman. Some experience only a few symptoms, while others face changes that affect their health, work, and daily life. That is why tracking symptoms over time can be so valuable.

Our Menopause Symptom Checklist is designed to help women recognise patterns, have more informed conversations with their GP, and support better, evidence-based care. Every conversation, every checklist, and every research project brings us closer to improving long-term health outcomes.

But progress depends on research, and research depends on funding. By supporting menopause research, we can build the evidence needed to improve care for current and future generations.

Explore the checklist and learn more about the Menopause Research & Education Fund - mref.uk. Together, we can help ensure menopause gets the research it deserves.

Many people don't realise that declining oestrogen levels during menopause can contribute to bone loss over time, which may increase the risk of osteopenia and potentially osteoporosis. These increase the risk of bone fractures. Because bone loss often develops without obvious symptoms, it can go unnoticed for years.

Becoming informed about menopause means understanding how it can affect long-term health, including bone health. Evidence-based menopause research helps us improve prevention, diagnosis, and care, but there is still much more to learn. Continued funding is essential to close these knowledge gaps and support better outcomes for women.

Anxiety can be an unexpected symptom of menopause. For some, it may feel like constant worry, panic, irritability, or a sense of being overwhelmed, even without a clear cause.

Hormonal changes, disrupted sleep, and the physical and emotional challenges of menopause can all play a role, affecting wellbeing at home, in relationships, and in the workplace.

We need more research into the best ways to manage anxiety around menopause. Our article explores the connection between menopause and anxiety, what may be contributing to it, and practical, evidence-based approaches that can help.

Continued menopause research is essential, and every contribution helps support the evidence that improves future care. mref.uk
