The Bowlby Centre’s 29th Annual John Bowlby Memorial Conference is the first event to explore how attachment-based psychoanalytical psychotherapy can support people with learning disabilities.

This conference reflects an ongoing commitment to learning from and thinking alongside groups who have historically been underrepresented in psychotherapy, as we explore how attachment theory can be brought into dialogue with the realities of lived and relational experiences.

In partnership with International Psychotherapy and Disability (IPD), the conference brings together speakers: Dr Valerie Sinason, Tamsin Cottis, Dr Allan Skelly, Mark Linington, Dr Lisa Greenspan, Dr Georgina Parkes, Dr. Eimir McGrath, and Dr Angelina Veiga. Chaired by David O’Driscoll

A new half-day workshop designed and facilitated by Charles Brown to help supervisors contextualise addiction through an intercultural lens and provide tools you can use straight away.

Through facilitated discussion and breakout conversations, participants will reflect on how these dynamics affect supervision - whether as supervisors or supervisees - and identify practical interventions to deepen practice and strengthen clarity, courage, and accountability in work with supervisees.

At the heart of attachment theory is the understanding that human beings are inherently oriented towards forming emotional bonds. These bonds are not secondary to development but central to it, shaping both internal experience and relational patterns across the lifespan. Early relational experiences often contribute to internal working models that continue to influence how individuals relate to others in adulthood.

CALL FOR PAPERS
ATTACHMENT AND DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY
For a special edition of Attachment: New Directions in Psychotherapy and Relational Psychoanalysis
Possible themes to write about include:
• the impact of digital technology on our attachment patterns
• social implications of digital technology, such as the spread of misinformation, misogyny, and polarisation
• concerns about privacy and security and the implications for psychotherapists
• AI psychosis
• examples of how digital technology has impacted clinical work and supervision
• the ethical and moral implications of using digital technology
• attachment hacking and digital boundaries on- and offline.

This is not an exhaustive list, so if you have an idea for an article, please email the editor-in-chief, Kate Brown, at [email protected] for an informal discussion about writing for the journal on this theme.

The deadline to receive articles for consideration of publication for this special issue is 31 July 2026.
