Progress continues with the rebuilding of the NER footbridge from Garforth, nr Leeds, to the Bredgar & Wormshill Light Railway in Kent. The red oxide paint has arrived and the red cedar planking for the steps. Looking forward to seeing the whole project completed.

Last week we visited Castle Cary to see the completed restoration by GWR which we supported with a £275k grant. The level of transformation can't be underestimated & the attention to detail is exemplary. Together with the next door Creamery, it's a destination station.

A visit to a completed project this week at Grade II Listed Lewes Station. We have provided a grant to this heritage inspired platform waiting shelter, which has replaced a life expired shelter (picture below).

We hope to help fund the replacement of the matching shelter on the other side.

With thanks to the Project Team at GTR and INVVU Construction Consultants for coming up with something more creative than the usual designs, for a listed station and to West Maintenance Services for carrying out a fantastic job.

It was clearly very well used and appreciated by passengers during the visit.

We held our Board Meeting today in Bury St Edmunds combining it with a closer look at some of the finest stations in the country. We’d love to see more effort to get them occupied and with a more sustainable future. There’s good work being done elsewhere in the route area but more needed here.

A great pleasure to speak about the work of Railway Heritage Trust at the AGM of the Betjeman society in Great Malvern today, in the former station hotel, known as the Imperial, and currently Malvern St James school. The spirit of JB runs through all our work. Had to pop into the station too.

In Scarborough on Monday to celebrate the final destination of the Railway 200 Inspiration Train, and to see the restored clocktower without any scaffolding. We gave a grant to support Network Rail undertake this work. Lovely to catch up with many railway friends and colleagues and celebrate the final Railway 200 event.

As a Trustee of the National Railway Heritage Awards I was pleased to join Colin Nichol of National Highways’ Historical Railways Estate in unveiling their winner’s plaque for a structure on a disused line - the Bonnington overbridge which leads to the eponymous hydro-electric power station by the Falls of Clyde near Lanark in Scotland. We were joined by Jacobs and Balfour Beatty, NH’s contractors, by NRHA judges and members of the RHT Advisory Panel. The disused line over which the bridge was built in 1863 was the Lanark to Muirkirk branch line.

A few more photos from our plaque unveiling at Gatekeepers Cottage at the station, by our Chair, Andy Savage and the Ingatestone Museum Trust

This is an excellent example of a restoration and reuse of a redundant railway building that can now be used and enjoyed by the local community. Not all our projects receive plaques, so to do so recognises a significant contribution to railway heritage restoration.

The local school are heavily featured within the cottage, including a lovely wall of art. A few pictures below.
