Plants are not sentient. While it is true that plants react to stimuli, they do not feel pain or emotions.

At the cellular level, plants respond to changes in temperature, light, moisture, soil quality, wind, weather, climate, and environmental conditions. Their hormones regulate a wide range of processes, including growth rate, flowering, and seasonal adaptations.

Despite the complexities of their sensitivities, plants lack the physiological substrates and emotional awareness necessary to experience pain and suffering.

Such an ability depends on having a brain and a nervous system, which plants lack.

Without a nervous system, plants have neither a mechanism for feeling pain nor a brain to have emotions like suffering.

The real danger of the recently launched US Food Pyramid is deepened moral numbness.

A global plant-based system is the way forward.

As their pyramid shows quite clearly, we will never advance a society aligned with any values for justice, peace and non-harm.

Promoting animals as FOOD normalises the violence and oppression of billions of sentient beings.

Our Human Ecology Project food pyramid promotes health and well-being for all humans and nonhumans alike.
