Islington Parent Carer Forum is made up of 10 volunteers, these 10 volunteers make up our steering group, all members of the steering group live in Islington and are a parent/career of a young person with SEND (special educational need and disabilities).
Our role is to listen families in Islington, we do this by hosting events, running our own coffee mornings, attending school coffee mornings and working closely with other SEND organisations across the borough, making sure we listen to parents/carers experiences so we can help shape local services.
As part of this work, we also feed into the National Network of Parent Carer Forums (NNPCF), which brings together all 152 forums across England. The NNPCF works at a national level to ensure that parent carer voices are part of key conversations with the Department for Education, NHS England, and others involved in SEND policy and reform.
In fact, much of our role is to challenge decisions and proposals that don’t reflect the realities families face — and to do that from within the system, working in partnership is not easy to do so on a local and national level, it comes with incredible challenges and frustrations. That said, we are very proud of all the parent volunteers locally and nationally that give up their time to do so.
We invite parent volunteers to get involved by attending our events and coffee mornings, but it’s just as important for parents/carers to sign up to be part of our mailing list, this is so we can send out invites for events, local SEND policy information but more importantly questionnaires about your families SEND journey
We don’t claim to speak for every parent, it’s impossible, but we are committed to reflecting a wide range of voices, and reaching as many as possible, which is another reason for joining the friends of the forum mailing list.
