To truly listen is to offer someone more than silence.

It is to offer your attention without rushing ahead, without preparing your response, without quietly deciding who they are before they have finished speaking.

In interfaith ministry, presence is not passive.
It is a practice.

It asks us to meet another person with care, curiosity, and humility, especially when their beliefs, questions, grief, or hopes are different from our own.
Sometimes the most meaningful gift we can offer is not advice.

It is the steady, generous attention that says: I am here. I am listening.

Some of the most important voices in interfaith ministry are the ones that have had to fight hardest to find their place in faith at all.

Justin Hardie is one of our students here at OneSpirit. He grew up in the west of Scotland with his life revolving around church, and when he realised as a teenager that he was attracted to boys, he turned to his faith for guidance. What followed was six years of conversion therapy, from the ages of 17 to 23, that left him, in his own words, "completely emotionally traumatised."

He has since spoken publicly about that experience and campaigned for legislation to ban conversion therapy in Scotland and across the UK.

In his own words:

"For many years, I believed I had to choose between my faith and my sexuality. Conversion therapy taught me to distrust myself, fear my own authenticity and believe that love was conditional. My journey since then has been one of reclaiming both my spirituality and my sense of self.

Today, I no longer see queerness and spirituality as being in conflict. Instead, I understand both as sacred expressions of who we are. My ministry is rooted in the belief that no one should have to experience rejection, shame or harm in the name of faith, and that healing becomes possible when people are given the freedom to tell their stories and be fully themselves.

Pride, for me, is both celebration and remembrance: celebrating how far we have come, while remembering those who are still fighting to be seen, heard and protected. Until conversion therapy is banned everywhere, our work is not finished..."

You can hear more of Justin's story on a recent podcast episode, 'Conversion Practice: Justin's Story' on Spotify.

OneSpirit is beyond proud to have Justin in our community, and grateful that he is willing to share his story.

Interfaith ministry is not about making every path sound the same.

It is about learning how to meet people with reverence, even when their beliefs, questions, or experiences are very different from our own.

It is the practice of staying open.
Listening without rushing.
Serving without needing to fix.
Honouring the sacred, the uncertain, the human, and the deeply personal.

At its heart, interfaith ministry is presence.

The kind that says: You do not need to be changed to be held with care.

Come and meet us. 🌿

At OneSpirit, everyone arrives from a different place. Some come with a clear sense of calling. Others arrive with a quiet curiosity, a feeling that something is stirring without yet knowing quite what.

Wherever you are, you are always welcome.

Our Intro Days are relaxed, free gatherings on Zoom where you can meet the teaching team, get a genuine feel for our approach, and sense whether this path might be right for you. No pressure, no expectation.

We run separate sessions for each pathway: Willow Path is held by Annie, Monica, Sarah, and our associate tutor team. Sylvan Path is held by Dawn and Una.

Upcoming dates (all times BST):
🌿 Mon 22 June, 6:30–8:30pm (Willow)
🌿 Thu 30 July, 2:00–4:00pm (Sylvan)
🌿 Wed 5 August, 6:30–8:30pm (Willow)
🌿 Thu 6 August, 2:00–4:00pm (Sylvan)
🌿 Tue 8 September, 6:30–8:30pm (Willow)
🌿 Thu 10 September, 6:30–8:30pm (Sylvan)

You're welcome to attend as many as you like.

"When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy." – Rumi

Sacred inclusivity is one of the pillars of how we try to live and work at OneSpirit. Not a box to tick, not a statement made once a year, but a spiritual commitment rooted in the belief that every person carries inherent worth and dignity.

Pride month is another chance to name that out loud. To say clearly: whoever you are, however you love, whatever path has brought you here, you will always be met with open hearts.

That river Rumi speaks of moves in all of us... we firmly believe that.

To echo the lovely Rev Helen James,

"May all beings be safe & happy, live with ease, and know liberation. May all beings be free. 🙏"

💘

🌈 Pride, for me, is about the full acceptance of who I am, not having to hide or deny a part of myself. Not being given shame by people who love you with conditions.

🌈 Pride is a celebration that love is love. Pride is still so important today as people around the world are still discriminated against because of their sexual orientation or their gender identity.

🌈 Whilst there are still places in the world where it is illegal to be LGBTQ+ (65 countries worldwide outlaw being gay, in 11 it is punishable by the death penalty) and whilst bigotry and prejudice are on the rise all round the world, Pride remains important. Pride is working towards the safety and freedom to share ‘I am here, I deserve love.’

🌈 Pride is a time of empowerment, where public spaces are occupied to celebrate love, and to also challenge homophobic and transphobic laws and legislation, and a reminder that we have a way to go in dismantling the prejudices that exist in society today. I hope one day we will live in a global society where all individuals are celebrated.

“REMEMBERING OUR UNITY, HONOURING OUR UNIQUENESS”

🌈 At the heart of OneSpirit Interfaith Ministry’s code of ethics is ‘remembering our unity, honouring our uniqueness’ and we actively aim to keep our hearts and minds open to everyone. Celebrating difference but not separation. We stand firmly in the position that we are all one, connected through love, and are committed to joining in the awakening of a global and inclusive spirituality.

May all beings be safe & happy, live with ease, and know liberation. May all beings be free. 🙏
