It was an absolute pleasure to welcome Team BTS (Beyond The Sign) to RAD yesterday! 🌏

Visiting all the way from South Korea, their team of researchers and interpreters visited our London office for a collaborative group session.

Our CEO, Mark Wheatley, joined team members Ayla, Samuel, and Paul for a great discussion with the group, covering key topics like AI’s role in the deaf community, exchanging experiences and insights from both sides of the globe. Mark commented afterwards:

“It was so lovely to welcome international visitors to our London Office. A great opportunity to share experiences and look forward to more international visitors in the future.”

With a mix of BSL, Korean Sign Language (KSL), International Sign (IS), English, and Korean flowing through the room, it was a fantastic reminder of how strong the global deaf community is. Beyond the knowledge sharing, the day was packed with plenty of smiles and laughs.

Queen Alexandra, wife of King Edward VII, experienced significant hearing loss and is closely connected to deaf history in Britain.

She regularly attended signed services at St Saviour’s Church in Oxford Street, a church with strong links to what is now RAD, and is believed to have used fingerspelling to follow services and communicate. She was also known for supporting deaf artists and the deaf community.

Her story is a reminder that deaf history can be found in unexpected places, including at the heart of British royal history!
