August saw a record number of monthly visitors attend the environment exhibition at Old Lochmaddy School, so many many thanks to everybody who stopped by, recommended the exhibition, shared a positive sentiment, or otherwise contributed. All your help is greatly appreciated.

And as well as the exhibition, there were other activities worthy of note, thanks, and congratulations over the course of the month:
- SWI Lochmaddy held its summer exhibition in the school, showcasing the array of lovely work its members had put together.
- Donald MacKinnon MSP stopped by to hold a constituency surgery, as well as tour the exhibition - giving it a seal of approval in the visitors book.
- On the subject of seals, or at least a photo of one: Logan Maclean picked up his prize for winning the recent Outer Hebrides Wildlife Festival Wildlife Photography Competition Under 18's category.
- Raphael Rychetsky, winner of the Open Category for his startling starling photo, also came by to get his prize and tour the exhibits.
- Sadie Gorvett from Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust addressed a full room on the Weird and Wonderful World of Whales, before a few souls braved the midges to practice a whale watch at the waterfront (with zero appreciation for timing, four dolphins were spotted 5km out ten minutes after it concluded).
- Machair Weave, which runs the weaving studio on the top floor, welcomed a group of visitors keen to learn more about the techniques of traditional weaving.
- Another round of driving theory tests was held, putting more drivers 'on the road' to getting their licence.
- The ICAN Resource Centre opened, providing online research resources and meeting equipment not only to ICAN members but the broader community.

So thank you to everyone making use of this community resource.

Finally, anyone interested in receiving direct emails about future events at the old school, or holding their own activities in any of the spaces, just get in touch via [email protected].

Old Lochmaddy School has joined the network of ICAN community resource centres.

Devised by ICAN (Islands Community Action Network), these resource centres serve as physical spaces for those wishing to participate in or research environmental, net zero, or climate action projects. They provide access to the ICAN online resource library, as well as meeting facilities.

Additionally, the computer and OWL meeting device are available for public use by individuals or organisations within the community for meetings, work, or research purposes during the school's opening hours. Anyone interested in using the facilities can simply get in touch via [email protected], or stop by the school Thursday (1pm-5pm), Friday (11am-5pm), or Saturday (11am-5pm).

Tonight (Friday) at Old Lochmaddy School, 5.45pm
The Weird and Wonderful World of Whales, with Sadie Gorvett of Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust.

Sadie Gorvett from HWDT will be at Old Lochmaddy School this evening to present a talk on one of the ocean's most iconic groups of animals: whales. From their unusual biology to their place within traditional culture, this is an opportunity to learn more about these giants of the sea, many of which roam the waters off the Western Isles.

At 7pm the talk moves to the mackerel statue in Lochmaddy for practical instruction on whale spotting, including how to use the HWDT Whale Track app to participate in record-keeping and citizen science.

The Old Lochmaddy School talk is the penultimate event in a week of HWDT activities, which finishes tomorrow (Saturday) at Balranald Nature Reserve.

Tonight's talk is free to attend, with refreshments available.
All welcome.

Over the course of July, the Old Lochmaddy School Wildlife Photography Competition received some genuinely fantastic submissions. From short-eared owls, sea eagles, and stags, to wild flowers, moths, and whales, a wide selection of the Western Isles' wonderful wildlife was celebrated through photography, making a beautiful addition to the Outer Hebrides Wildlife Festival.

That all of the judges chose different photographs as their favourite shows how difficult judging such a competition is. However, after amalgamating the judges' scores, the winners are:

Under 18s: Logan Maclean, with his picture of a seal
Open: Raphael Rychetsky, with his picture of a starling

Congratulations to both.

Thank you to our judges - Jean Archer from NUDC, Sharon MacPherson from Outer Hebrides Wildlife Festival, and Sadie Young from Taigh Chearsabhagh - and of course a huge thank you to everyone who took the time to enter photographs. We hope you continue to enjoy the wildlife the isles offers.
