Tree Seed Collection Day - this Friday 16th Oct, 10am-4pm.

Just a reminder that it's our last tree seed collection day coming up. We'll be collecting a mix of holly, rowan, alder and maybe a few hazels at Glencanisp.

Seed Collection Day - Fri 16th Oct, 10am-4pm
We have our final tree seed collection day of the year coming up. Come along to Glencanisp for a relaxing day in the woods as we collect seed to help restore the rich rainforest of our West coast.

Thanks to those that came along in September and to Historic Assynt for their follow up posts highlighting that collecting tree seeds is a timeless activity dating back millennia. Amazing for me to think I'm following in the footsteps of so many generations of people in Assynt.

Many thanks to Historic Assynt for their posts following on from our seed collection day in September. It hadn't occurred to me that I was following in the footsteps of so many generations of people in this landscape collecting Rowan berries and Hazel nuts - part of an agro-forestry culture dating back millenia.

Rainforest weather ☔🌿
We may not have had the best summer for sunbathing, but it's been ideal weather for Assynt's temperate rainforest! The trees, mosses and lichens have been thriving in these cool, damp conditions.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at Glencanisp this spring and summer for our activities and events. From exploring lichens and foraging to mushroom carving, leaf printing and soap making, we've had a brilliant time learning together.

Special thanks to our tutors Oliver Moore, Dave McBain, Tom Banks and Ellie Mackay for sharing their expertise and enthusiasm.

Tree Seed Collection Days

Sunday 13th Sept - 10am - 4pm
Friday 16th October - 10am - 4pm

Join us for a day in the woods collecting tree seeds, berries and nuts and learning about our rainforests. We’ll be collecting at Glencanisp and looking for Rowan, Birch, Hazel, Oak and others.

Seed collections will be led by Roz Birch from our partner charity, Trees for Life, while our ranger, Chris Goodman, will explore the wildlife that makes up these special woodlands.

A wonderful way to spend the day in the tranquillity of these woodlands, quietly noticing wildlife, meeting others and helping the future of these vibrant rainforests.

Family Foraging Day - Mon 17th Aug, 10am-4pm

Our last activity day for the Summer is a family foraging day at Glencanisp with Ellie Mackay.

A fun family day exploring the grounds of Glencanisp to collect wild plants, cook them on a fire and get creative!

We'll search for edible wild foods and plants used for crafts, learning local botanical heritage, how to identify plants and forage sustainably. You’ll learn how to make a campfire and then cook the wild edibles. After lunch try your hand at weaving, dyeing and creating plant infusions from the various plants you gathered.

Mushroom Making and Family Day

Come along to the Art Studio at Glencanisp on Weds 15th July for some creative woodland themed family fun.

Wooden Tom is here making wooden mushrooms. Your chance to use some tools under his expert supervision and then paint your toadstool to look like one of our rainforest fungi.

You can also make your own green man forest mask with our ranger, Chris, using tree leaves and your imagination plus a bit of glue.

And have a go at our nature bingo on the nature trail and see if you can get a full house.
