Seed Savers Group for 2026 - Read below for how you can get involved & details of our first online meetup 🌱

What you need to join the Seed Savers group -
- You need to be able to dedicate space in your garden or community plot to grow plants for seed
- You ideally have 1-2 years experience with growing food (& dealing with challenges like pests)
- You can join our whatsapp group, where we will share updates through the season and you ask questions
- At the end of the season we will ask you to complete a record about your seed crop and attend a late Summer gathering to process and collect in the seed for the coop
(there’ll be crop failures & that’s okay!)

Seed Saver Group Zoom Intro Meeting on Monday March 23rd from 7pm - Please PM us for the zoom link.
There will be a brief introduction to seed saving and more information on what we're asking you to do when growing seed for the coop. More importantly this meeting will be an opportunity to ask questions and discuss our seed crop plans together! We will be recording the meeting for those that cannot make it.

We have the following varieties available from Scottish company 'Potato House' that are either Scottish heritage varieties or known to grow well in our climate -
Pentland Javelin (first early)
Kestrel (second early)
Arran Victory Organic (main crop)
Cara Organic (main crop)
Valor (main crop)

We look forward to seeing you next Friday at Ford Village Hall!

🌱 Seed saving in communities - we're delighted to be supporting local community groups with starting or growing their seed saving journey in their own project space ✨

This week we have visited Susannah Act MAKI pups outdoor nursery & Michelle at Green Shoots garden Hope Kitchen Oban to share seeds & help them get started with seed saving this season πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ

We'll be supporting them through the season with learning materials, providing some workshop support & helping with processing their seed crops whilst learning how best we can support different types of local community projects with our seed collection in the future ✨

If you're a local community group looking to learn more about seed saving do get in touch [email protected] of DM us here.

Seed packing station 🌱✨

We've been busy packing up seeds for all of you attending our upcoming seed swaps or joining in with our seed savers group πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ

We're excited to say we've got a really good variety of seeds from fantastic UK growers producing open pollinated seeds... With a focus on varieties that grow well in our climate & a selection that are easy to save seed from!

As it's our first year we are limiting selections to 4 packets per person. This way we can make sure as many folks get to try seed saving/growing food as possible 🌱

If you can't make it tomorrow Mid Argyll Seed Coop Seed Gathering or to our future seed swaps on at Bookswap on 4th & Ford Hall on the evening of 21st march but want to join our seed savers group then please email us [email protected] & we can set you up with seeds ✨

With thanks to ABCAN for our seed fund to get started & to Real Seeds & Vital Seeds for the generous donations of additional seed & resources πŸ™

Who else gets overly excited by a seed delivery? 🌱✨

With our seed event (inc. seed swap) coming up this Sunday we've got seeds arriving from some incredible small businesses selling open pollinated seeds actually grown in the UK 🌱 & we're packing up some of our own saved seed from our seed saving training last year with Seed Sovereignty Programme in Scotland πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ

Thanks to our ABCAN kickstart funding we had a small budget for starting the collection, which means small packets of seeds will be available on donation for you to try out and we can also support you in learning to save your own seed in return for sending some back to us at the end of this growing season!

We are therefore focusing on collecting seeds that we believe will do well in our climate & are easier to save seed from...and some that have Scottish origins ✨

Here we have some outdoor blight resistant tomatoes & climbing beans suited to wet/cold climates both available from Wales Seed Hub - Hwb Hadau Cymru 🀩

If you haven't already please go and check out their extensive online catalogue of seeds grown in Wales (a pretty similar climate to us!) by some incredible seed savers - they've got a lot of seeds that would grow really well here in Argyll!

Hopefully see you on Sunday for our Mid Argyll Seed Coop Seed Gathering including our seedswap ✨ 2-4pm Kilmartin Museum Community room!
