📰 Westminster Abbey 23rd February 2024

A couple of years ago (unknown to me) I was nominated for the Silver Acorn for services to Scouting in Llantwit Major and was surprised to receive an email informing me I needed to attend a presentation evening in Barry to receive the award. Needless to say, I felt very proud to have been nominated and to receive this award.

However, I was even more surprised to receive an invite to attend “A National Scout Service of Celebration and Thanksgiving” at Westminster Abbey on 23rd February 2024.

I was allowed to take one other guest so while I had to wear my Scout uniform, I had to buy my wife, Wendy, a new dress!

We travelled up on Thursday and booked into our hotel close to the Abbey. The last time we had been to London we were both in our teens so things had changed in the 30years or so that have passed! We planned to walk down to the Abbey to ensure we would find our way on the Friday morning. However, when we arrived in London, it was raining hard, and we decided to forego the walk and get up early as the weather on the Friday looked promising.

Friday morning, we were up by 6:30am and on the embankment by 7:00am for a stroll along the river. We need not have worried as it was an easy 20mins walk from our hotel. After returning to the hotel for breakfast, we then walked back to the Abbey with a couple of Leaders from Derbyshire and joined the back of the queue.

There were about 600 other Scout members and their partners from around the country attending the Service.

The various Area and Regional Commissioners along with HQ staff ensured everyone moved along smoothly and we were inside the Abbey well before the 12:00noon start.

The Abbey was everything we expected, and we felt privileged to be in location we had only previously seen on TV.

The Service was conducted by The Very Reverend David Hoyle KCVO MBE, Dean of Westminster and the Service was sung by Westminster Abbey Special Service Choir. The Lord Mayor of Westminster was represented by Councillor Patricia McAllister.

Readings were made by various members of the Scout Organisation including a 12-year-old Scout (very brave with an audience of over 1200 people). The Service concluded with the hymn “Guide me O thou great Redeemer” which was sung with great gusto especially by the Welsh contingent.

We came out to the sound of the Abbey bells being rung and met up with another couple from South Wales to discuss the event before returning home. All in all, a very enjoyable experience and very pleased to have been invited.

I have now been involved in Scouting in the Vale for over 35years and enjoy seeing a Beaver, Cub or Scout achieve a new skill or gain the next badge. Yes, I put in more than the “hour a week” I was told was required for my son to jump the Waiting List, but I enjoy seeing the Young Members achieve.
