As part of the Repair Cafe Wales initiative, we have been providing a local, voluntary repair service for portable domestic items since Oct 2018.

Our key strength is the breadth of experience within our team of volunteers.

Llantwit Major Town Mayor, Graham Morgan, dropped in on the Repair Cafe at Llantonian Hall recently, meeting some of the team members. The Repair Cafe has been operating in Llantwit since 2018, always on the 2nd Saturday each month, starting at Bethel Church Hall but has been using the increased space at Llantonian Hall for over a year now. The team of volunteers has steadily grown in number (and ability/experience) over the years.

Graham has also been a customer at the operation, and showed off his 'Spirit of St Louis' retro radio, which Colin had repaired earlier! The Repair Cafe is happy to take on all kinds of repairs of portable household items, and there was a good selection of furniture, video cameras, CD players, luggage, sewing machines, vacuum cleaners, lamps, stained glass, IT items, tools for sharpening and a toy electric car present and being repaired that day! Repairs are normally free (unless significant spare parts are required)'.

Fixed! This CD player had a swollen/loose drive belt for the tray open/close mechanism which was relatively easy to replace. Typically drive belts have a 5-10yr service life before needing replacement, and fail by going brittle/snapping or by becoming loose as they expand. We've got a limited stock of replacemeng drive belts suitable for CD/DVD players, record players and other WiFi units. Please try us or let us help find a replacement. Our next event is Sat Aug 8th.

It's useful to try some things as diagnostic tools before deciding how to repair an item. Our fixer Mark repaired a DVD player last week that was unable to play DVDs. But it did play CDs no problem...indicating the laser module, the lens and the drive mechanisms were all responding OK. Many DVD players have the means to adjust laser alignment, and this is what we did to fix the item! (Please don't try this at home!).

But if the DVD player was able to spin up both DVDs and CDs we would suspect either the laser module or the lens.

Although we're happy to 'have a go' at fixing most things, there comes a time in some repairs to consider contacting professionals. This antique clock may need a new escapement potentially, which could be an expensive or difficult part to source, and it's at that point that it's good to find a professional if we can't get the mechanism going ourselves.
Other times we're a bit luckier and a bit of clock oil in the right place often sorts issues out! At no cost!

Our next event is at Llantonian Hall on Sat Jun 13th 10am to noon. We are looking forward to seeing your portable household goods, hopefully fixing them!

The item pictured is something we can often fix by cleaning - a TV remote control - but which had clearly suffered liquid ingress and was so dirty inside that we were unsuccessful. If these things are caught early we stand a bit more chance of getting them to work again!

We're back at Llantonian Hall on Saturday 9th May, 10-12, and will be looking forward to the 'surprise' items our customers will be bringing us.

Here's an example Hyundai mini sewing machine which has an 'issue' we can fix. The plastic cog at the motor has split, resulting in the mechanism running 'rough' if at all. In fact this is the 2nd time we've seen this with mini sewing machines of different makes...back in the old vintage days these would have been metal parts and would have been designed to last longer. Anyway we can produce a replacement part on a 3D printer to fix this.

We'll be back at Llantonian Hall on Saturday 11th April, 10-12 looking forward to helping fix your household goods!

We try to fix most portable household items, including bikes, computers, mobile phones, electricals, fabric items, toys, clocks and watches. We can't fix larger appliances, microwaves, and petrol powered items.

We're always looking out for new volunteers as well, especially a new 'material girl' (or boy) with fabric repair skills. if there are people interested please come for a chat!
