π Memory problems are one of the most common, but least talked about, challenges faced by people living with epilepsy.
Seizures, medication, sleep, mood and even the specific part of the brain affected can all play a role in how well we remember things.
Hereβs how epilepsy can impact memory:
π§ Temporal lobe epilepsy can affect verbal memory (names, words) or visual memory (faces, places).
π§ Frontal lobe involvement may make planning ahead or remembering future tasks more difficult.
π§ After seizures, confusion and short-term memory issues are common but usually temporary.
Other factors such as lack of sleep, stress, ageing, or epilepsy surgery can also affect concentration and recall.π
If youβre experiencing memory difficulties, youβre not alone, and itβs not your fault. Simple supports can make a big difference:
β
Use phone reminders or alarms
β
Keep a diary, calendar or βtoβdoβ list
β
Try colourβcoded sticky notes in key places
β
Use a dosette box to keep track of medication
β
Speak to your GP or consultant if memory issues are worrying you
