🎄🐾 Coming soon… Karen’s Cat Community Christmas Cards! 🐾🎄

We’re working on something festive featuring some of our very own KCC cats, past and present, and we can’t wait to share them with you 💛

Our Christmas cards will help raise funds for the rescue and sanctuary cats in our care, supporting food, litter, medication, vet bills and all the everyday costs that keep them safe, warm and loved.

🐾 KCC Shop Update – Wednesday 7th October 🐾

We were hoping to open today from 12–4pm, but with a couple of our volunteers away and a lot going on behind the scenes, we’ve decided the kindest and most sensible thing is to say the shop will be closed today.

We will still be working today, but we need the time to catch up with online orders, sanctuary admin, sorting stock, and all the usual cat care that has to happen before anything else.

At the moment we’re juggling quite a lot; caring for the cats, packing online orders, sorting our 2027 calendars, getting our sanctuary cat art prints online, and finishing up work on one of the rooms that had to be repaired and redecorated after cat damage.

We know opening hours can be a bit unpredictable, especially while volunteers are away, and we really appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding. We are both doing our best, but we also need to be realistic about what we can manage.

Lauren’s upstairs Cwtch Cath space is mainly an online shop and workspace, but she does try to open when she can alongside helping downstairs. Her next definite opening day will be 24th October, during the Chocolate Festival, with Halloween stock available too 🎃

Before we turn in for the night, we just wanted to say a massive THANK YOU. ❤️

Today was a bit of a disappointing day. Another day where the shop made a loss, and then we came home to a poorly Simba, who has sadly been sick on and off all day. So tonight hasn't exactly ended how we'd hoped.
But amongst all the difficult bits, there was something really lovely that we don't say thank you for nearly enough.
The donations that are clearly given with thought. ❤️

The clothes that have been washed, folded neatly and sometimes even smell lovely and fresh. The beautiful second-hand things that are still in really good condition. The new items that still have their labels on. The donations where somebody has actually stopped and thought, "Would someone else be happy to receive this?"

Those donations make such a difference to an independent non-profit like us. They can be turned into money for the cats, rather than ending up in landfill.

And while we're on the subject, we do need to say something that we probably don't say often enough: please don't leave bags of rubbish outside the shop.

We're not being difficult or "moaning" when we say we can't accept soiled, damaged or unsafe items. There are genuine reasons for charity shops and second-hand shops having donation guidelines. Things can be contaminated, there can be sharp objects or other hazards hidden inside bags, and unfortunately we've had to deal with things that simply should never have been donated.

When things are dumped outside our door, we can't just leave them there. We're a small independent shop in a small town. Someone has to deal with it, often meaning gloves on, volunteers told not to touch anything and us having to sort through it ourselves.

And ultimately, the things that can't be sold don't magically disappear. They become waste and, very often, end up in landfill.

So please, before donating, just have a think. Would you be happy to buy it? Would you be happy for a volunteer to have to sort through it? If the answer is no, it probably isn't suitable for donation.
But tonight isn't really about the negatives.

It's about saying THANK YOU to the people who do think about what they're donating. To the people who wash it, fold it, package it carefully and bring us things that they know can genuinely help.

We notice. We appreciate it. And every pound raised from those donations goes towards helping the cats.

We talk about the difficult stuff because sometimes we have to. But life has enough negativity already, so tonight we're choosing to end the day by celebrating the good people too. ❤️

If you don't laugh, you cry... honestly. 😂

We've just shut the KCC shop after one of those days.

Lauren has an eye appointment today because she's really struggling to see properly and, with type 1 diabetes, it's something we're understandably worried about.

Simba has been sick. Little Sasha has been sick. We're rushing around trying to get everything done and meanwhile Jade has given up her Friday to come and hold the fort at the shop.

She's also wearing exactly the same cat T-shirt as me, so at least we're twinning. 😂

Today's takings?

£10.

And £5 of that was Jade buying a pair of curtains! 😂

But here's the thing. That £10 isn't necessarily £10 towards the vet bill.

Volunteers give their time, but they often use their own cars and their own fuel too. Diesel is now over £2 a litre, and Jade drives 30–40 minutes each way to get to us. Other volunteers travel by bus because we're rural.

So sometimes, after the cost of simply getting here, we're not even covering the cost of opening the doors.

And that's why local support really matters.

We do get comments saying, "You weren't open," or "I wanted that £3 item in the window."

We understand it's frustrating if you've made a special trip, but we're a rescue shop run by volunteers, not a business with paid staff.

We're currently aiming for Tuesday–Saturday, 10am–3pm. Occasionally we have to change hours because volunteers have holidays or other commitments, and we put those changes on Facebook and on the shop door.

And yes, we are getting new stock out and rotating things! 😂

But ultimately, the shop can only keep going if people actually come through the door.

Every little purchase helps towards food, litter, medication and those ever-growing vet bills.

So if you're local, pop in, have a rummage, buy something, tell a friend or share our posts.

Because behind this little shop is a lot of volunteer time, a lot of diesel, a lot of hard work — and a lot of rescue cats depending on it. 🐾

Now we're off to Lauren's appointment... because apparently rescuing cats wasn't enough for one day! 😂

🎃 HAPPY 1ST OCTOBER! 🎃
Halloween has officially arrived at KCC! 🖤

We’ve restocked some spooky bits in the shop and we’re also starting to bring out our winter stock — because apparently Christmas is coming whether we’re ready or not! 😂

10am–3pm with the lovely Zoe holding the fort.

And we’re open Friday & Saturday, 10am–3pm, with Jade looking after the shop.

So if you’re out and about, pop in and have a rummage! 🛍️
Second-hand treasures, books, bric-a-brac, cat goodies, spooky bits and lots more — with shop profits helping our rescue cats.

And of course, shopping small and supporting a local rescue really does make a difference. ❤️

🐾 SIMBA HAS A QUESTION…

Because Simba has been working VERY hard today making sure the shop is looking its absolute best!

Everything has been arranged so it’s easy to browse, easy to find things and, hopefully, very easy to spend your money for a VERY good cause!

And upstairs, Lauren has been busy in Cwtch Cath, with the fairy music playing, incense burning and the fairy lights glowing… well, they WOULD be glowing properly if someone remembered to change the batteries! 🤦‍♀️😂

There’s also a sale rail in the foyer and a FREE ITEMS box for anyone who would like to have a rummage.

So really, Simba would like to know…

🐾 KCC Shop open today – Friday 11th September, 10am–3pm 🛍️

We’re open today from 10am until 3pm, and we’ve got lots of lovely new items out in the shop after some very generous large donations recently 💛

We’d also like to introduce Jade, who will be helping in the shop today.

Jade has been one of our fosterers for years and has helped not only Karen’s Cat Community, but other rescues too. She’s been involved with trapping and neutering, helping cats in need, caring for animals big and small, and is a huge animal lover: cats, dogs, and everything in between 🐱🐶🐾

She also house-sits and looks after people’s animals, and is one of those lovely people who genuinely cares for both animals and humans.

Please pop in, say hello to Jade, and have a browse if you’re in Llanidloes today. Every purchase helps support the cats in our care at Karen’s Cat Community 🐈‍⬛💛

🍂🎃 AUTUMN HAS ARRIVED AT KCC SHOP — WITH A LITTLE HINT OF HALLOWEEN! 🎃🍂

Brian has been holding the fort in the shop since 10am, but he’ll be leaving shortly, so if you’re planning a visit, now’s the time to pop in!

We’ve also changed the window display and it’s looking very autumnal, with just a little hint of Halloween. 🍁🎃👻

Just to make it absolutely clear — the pumpkins, ghouls and other Halloween props in the window are NOT FOR SALE. If something in the window, or anything Halloween-themed in the shop, is for sale, it will have a price on it. Simple! 🎃

We do have a small number of Halloween costumes that will be going out over the next few weeks. So, if you’ve got old Halloween costumes you’d like to rehome, now is the perfect time to bring them along. 👻🧙‍♀️🎃

We’d particularly appreciate donations being brought in on a Wednesday, when Karen and Lauren are in and can sort everything straight away, rather than donations piling up waiting to be dealt with.
If Wednesday isn't possible, just give us a ring at the shop. And if you're local and have a larger donation, we'd actually prefer to come and collect it where possible. Karen or Gary will be happy to collect.

So if you’ve got Halloween costumes lurking in the back of the wardrobe that you no longerb need, let someone else give them a new lease of life! 🧙‍♀️👻🍂
