LCDP Brynna Community Garden 🌱
Mental Health Awareness Day

What a fantastic session we had at the community garden today. Quite a few allotment avengers came to do some hard work, stripping the beans and weeding the beds, cutting the willow, brambles and branches down in the fairy garden and generally tidying up ready to do some planting.

We ended the session by celebrating the fantastic achievement of Dawn Doyle by being awarded Volunteer of the Year with in the Keep Wales Tidy - South East - Tidy Wales Awards

Dawn your commitment and enthusiasm is absolutely fantastic and we can't thank you enough for what you do. We celebrated with Chocolate cake, carrot cake and fairy cakes and Dawn was presented with a little medal and a box of hero’s chocolates.

Our allotment avengers will be at the community garden next Saturday for those of you that can join us 10am to 12pm, October 17th 🌸🌱

After the produce is picked (Basil 🌱🌶️ chilli, garlic 🧄 pumpkin)🎃 and taken home today, local children learning safe knife skills chopping the basil ready for making pesto 🌱how great is that 🤩

🌿 IT’S TIME TO TAME THE WILD SIDE! 🌿

Thanks to funding from National Grid, we have been busy making some exciting changes at our LCDP Eco-Hub.

Over the summer, we created our new rockery, but we deliberately left our Wild Side alone while birds were nesting and wildlife was making the most of it. 🐦🐝🐞

Now nesting season has finished, we have a short window to get to work before our insects start settling down for winter and the first frost! 🍂

We hae already made insect homes so our little Eco-Hub residents have somewhere safe to set up camp 🐞🏡 We also have three areas that we plan to transform:

🌼 The Wildflower Garden – clearing the brambles and overgrowth ready for a colourful, pollinator-friendly space. Perfect for when the insects come out of hibernation in the Spring.

🧚 The Fairy Garden – creating a little bit of Eco-Hub magic!

🌷 The Memory Garden – finishing with lots of spring bulbs ready to give us a beautiful display next year. And creating a space for the community to remember loved ones.

Our session today was a little quieter than usual thanks to this morning’s wet weather ☔, but sometimes the quieter sessions bring something completely unexpected.

We welcomed a new volunteer who we first met at our coffee morning on Monday, and while we worked, we heard so much about the history of Llanharan and what used to be on and around this land many years ago.

Stories about growing up locally, where children used to play and how much the village has changed.

Local history, shared by a local person. ❤️

There is something really special about that. Our Eco-Hub might be about improving biodiversity, and creating a greener future, but today was a lovely reminder that it can also be a place where generations meet, stories are shared and the history of our community is kept alive.

And, of course, we managed to tackle a fair few brambles along the way and squeeze in a cuppa! 😂🌿

A huge thank you to everyone getting stuck into our Biodiversity Boost project. Bit by bit, the Wild Side is taking shape. 💚

Thank you so much Heart Research UK ❤️

We honestly cannot express how much this funding has meant to us and to our community.

The Healthy Heart Grant gave us the opportunity to bring people together, try new activities, become more active, learn new skills and, importantly, build friendships and connections. For many people, these sessions became much more than an activity to attend; they became something to look forward to, a reason to get out of the house, meet others and feel part of their community.

Funding like this makes such a difference to small community organisations like ours. It allows us to respond to local need and provide opportunities that might otherwise simply not be possible.

We are incredibly proud of what Hearts and Minds achieved, particularly seeing 92% of participants becoming more physically active and every participant reporting an improvement in their mental wellbeing. But behind those statistics are real people, new friendships, increased confidence and a stronger community.

Some of the activities and relationships created through the project have also continued long after the original funding ended, which is perhaps one of the greatest legacies of all.

A huge thank you to Heart Research UK for believing in our project, believing in Llanharan Drop In Centre and investing in our community. 💚❤️
