The Dee Trust / Cynefin Dyfrdwy Working towards a River Dee free of pollution and full of wildlife.

19/06/2026

Our Restoring river habitats programme is putting the natural processes back into many of the tributaries across the Dee.

We do this because it benefits wildlife, a more natural river with meanders, deep pools and shallow riffles provides more homes for the wildlife of the river.

In some locations this natural river also helps people, providing storage for flood waters and reducing downstream flood peaks.

One of the River Dee’s most remarkable residents.

From building nests in the riverbed to migrations that take them between freshwater and the sea, lampreys have been part of our rivers for hundreds of millions of years.

Another incredible species that depends on a healthy River Dee. 🌿

πŸ“· Lamprey mouth image kindly provided by Life Dee , who are doing fantastic work to improve fish passage and habitat connectivity across the catchment.

We’re taking to the lower sections of the river Dee over summer and getting as much trash out of the river as possible.

Did you know Chester is home to one of the great animal migrations in the world?

Today is Wild Atlantic Salmon day. A species which passes through Chester on its epic migration from the seas off Iceland to return to its spawning sites in the upper Dee.

The species is sadly in decline, due to a wide range of factors such as habitat loss and pollution.

Want to find out more Tuesday 2nd June, our CEO will be leading some walks as part of Heritage Chester festival. Check out their programme to book a place.

NB. Rob is on Holiday, on his return normal production values will return. 😁

Straight back out on the river this morning 🌿

After a brilliant evening at Chester Picturehouse talking about the River Dee, sharing our new film and discussing the work happening across the catchment, it was back to practical action with a litter pick.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, asked questions, donated and supported the evening. Thanks also to for hosting us, Heritage Chester Festival for the help making it possible and Stuart. for producing an epic film.

The conversations are important, but so is getting out there and making a difference.

Produced by our trustee Stuart , who has done an incredible job capturing the River Dee and the work happening across the catchment, the film will be shown between talks about what we do and the challenges facing the river.

The full film runs for around 30 minutes and seeing it on the big screen is something special.

A huge thank you to the Festival for inviting us along to the open day 🌿

It was a brilliant day chatting to people about the River Dee, the work of Dee Trust and how people can get involved in protecting the river. We attracted new volunteers and people now following what we do.

An added bonus was seeing Dave, one of our volunteers, absolutely smashing it as part of πŸ₯

Remember to book your ticket for the open evening on Thursday!
