Today, 2nd of October 2026, Llanfairfechan Crown Green Bowling Club held the club Goodthray Cup Competition. After some beautiful weather for the club comps this year, our luck run out and we started the competition in the pouring rain, though that didn’t dampen the game play, and the first round games, gave us some drama, with 2 of the 3 games ending 21-20 and the third a close run 21-18, last years finalists Neil Smith and Barry Taylor meeting in the first round, with Neil just scraping by 21-20. In the quarter finals Richard Collier and David Dickinson had a close, hard fought game with Richard winnng it 21-17, seniors Captain Margaret Davies won her quarter final 21-8, Neil Smith came through 21-5 and in the final game Hefyn Edwards moved into the semi finals with a fine 21-13 win. The first semi final was close to the half way point , with Neil holding a slender 12-11 lead over Margaret Davies, only for Neil to pull away for the victory and make the final. The other semi final was also close half way through, with Richard having a 12-9 lead over Hefyn Edwards, Richard made the lead count and maintained the advantage till the end, progressing into the final. So the final was contested by Neil Smith and Richard Collier, The first 16 ends were a close affair, with Neil getting a slight lead only to be pegged back each time by Richard’s good bowling, the score a narrow 1 point lead to Neil 11-10, it was then Neil took control of the final with some consistent leading, which ultimately allowed him to pull away from Richard, eventually winning 21-13 and retaining the cup.
Margaret Davies, Seniors Team Captain presented the Goodthray Cup to Neil Smith at the conclusion.

Llanfairfechan Crown Green Bowling Club played the club Platt Handicap Challenge Cup yesterday, and were once again treated to some lovely sunny weather for the event. It was nice to see a good turnout, with only a few club members unable to play due to commitments. It was also good to see a few more of Wednesdays Colwyn League team playing, including John Short and Kev Bebbington for the first time since we re-commenced running club competitions. The first round saw the 2025 winner Mike Viney knocked out, which meant a new champion was to be crowned. In the quarter finals, despite their score handicaps, three of the favourites, Kev Bebbington, Craig Domney and John Short all progressed to the semi finals, and a fine display of bowling from Martin Taylor booked him the final place. The first semi final was between John Short and Martin Taylor, with Martin having a 7 shot start due to the handicap. The game started well for Martin who held on to the early advantage, and at one point held a 10 shot lead, but John Short showed his class, winning 13 ends in a row, which put him into a lead he never relinquished. The other semi final was a close affair, with both players playing off the same handicap, Kev Bebbington took an early lead only to be pegged back by Craig Domney, and at the half way point it was 11-11, it remained close till Kev had a small run of points which put him on the brink of a win, but Craig fought back getting close, only for Kev Bebbington to dig in and find the last 2 winning points and progress to the final. The final between Kev Bebbington and John Short was a great display of bowling for the spectators, Kev had a 3 shot start, but John was the favourite. John started where he left off from his semi final, playing at times, what looked like exhibition bowling, rarely leaving Kev, who was himself bowling extremely well, any room to bowl in. With this John took a 14-2 lead, Kev finally bowled in to take the jack, and set about a spirited fight back, and some great bowls from him halved the deficit at 10-16 down, only for John to retake the jack and continue his precision bowling, which eventually seen him run out a 21-13 winner, to take the well deserved win and the trophy.

Llanfairfechan Crown Green Bowling Club played the annual Clive Llewellyn Memorial Shield against Bethesda last week. Last year with home advantage Bethesda won the trophy back from Llanfair, after Llanfair had held it for the previous two years. This year Llanfair had home advantage and were determined to win the shield back. In the first half of the match, Bethesda started strongly with control in two of the four games, Llanfair up in one and the other game very tight. By the time the games were over, Bethesda had won three of the four, but spirited fight backs had kept the games close, with the doubles just losing on the last end, luckily for Llanfair, an excellent win by Richard Collier 21-9, meant despite losing in games 3-1, Llanfair only trailed by 5 points 67-72. After lunch the second half of the match began. Llanfair started well and were in command in three of the four matches, Martin Taylor was the first to finish his match, taking a very good 21-14 win, giving Llanfair a slender 2 point lead, Bethesda weren’t done though, they started fighting back and two of the games were very tight again, the doubles pair John Short and Rhian Hughes came off with a commanding 21-11 win, and put Llanfair on the brink of a win, the lead extended to 12 points. The two remaining games were eventually won by Llanfair, David Dickinson winning 21-16 and Barry Taylor 21-18, which made the winning margin 20 points, 151-131 Llanfairfechan winning back the shield.
Clive Llewellyn’s wife Georgina Hollas was present to support both teams her late husband played for, and kindly presented the Clive Llewellyn Shield to winning team captain Margaret Davies. A great day of bowling, and lovely annual get together in Clive’s memory.

The Tyreman Shield was held at the Green today Sunday 20th September. Once again there was a modest turnout, with many of the members away at present. But the members who did attend , were lucky to have some lovely sunny weather. The final was a repeat of the Delfryn Cup with Neil Smith and Mike Viney contesting a close game. In a reversal of the last Neil Smith came out on top, with the same score as the last 21-19. Thanks to everyone who attended, all in all a lovely day of bowling. Martin Taylor, Club Chairman presented the cup to the winner.
