Morning All,

Just a quick post to announce that the Regional Commandant Wales & West Region has announced my appointment as Wing Commander, OC No3 Welsh Wing wef Monday 9th March.

This is a bitter sweet announcement for me, as I am looking forward to taking the whole wing forward and building on the great work done by Wg Cdr Mal Thomas over the last two years, but this also means that I will be stepping down as OC of 1054 (Llanelli) Sqn.

Since my arrival back in July 2024 at the sqn, we as a team have worked hard to build up the sqn, with increased numbers, all cadets getting a flight within the first year, equipment and most importantly fun along the way. We have had some impressive achievements also, including a flying scholarship and a Lord Lt cadet appointment. The warm greeting and support from the staff and parents will not be forgotten, and shows why 1054 has that premier place within the wing. My cadets have a special place in my heart and have always made me beam with pride in everything you do.

Moving forward, I'd ask for you to continue that amazing support to FS Lyons and team that you gave to me. As my local sqn, I'll be swinging by to see how you are all doing and wish you all the best

Many Thanks

Flt Lt Kris Butler RAFAC
Officer Commanding

1054 Llanelli News:

Last night we were honoured to have Wg Cdr Thomas visit the sqn to present FS Kenneth Lyons with a very well deserved Commandants' Special Commendation for actions that saved a man's life next to the sqn back in Oct 2025.

The gentleman at the bowling club next door suffered a heart attack and thanks to FS Lyons' quick actions, saved his life and he made a full recovery. A huge well done from the sqn- we are extremely proud of FS Lyons and his actions that night and his recognition from Air Commodore Lewis.

Thursday saw the sqn visited by Mr Phil Barrow of A Walk Through Talk Through History Wales, with a fantastic interactive talk about Swansea/Gower and RAF Fairwood Common during WW2. Along with authentic period dress, Phil brought along a great selection of items such as helmets, ration books and gas masks. A Brilliant evening and lots of questions from the cadets. Thanks to Sgt David Lawrence Howells , Sqn Training SNCO for arranging.

Christmas Stand Down:

Evening,

With reference to the above and the low numbers due to illness and school concerts, etc the staff and I have decided that tonight (Monday 15th Dec) will be the last parade night of 2025. This year has seen the sqn busier that ever with a large amount of varied activities and training undertaken, with the staff team working hard to ensure we deliver the "cadet experience". With that in mind, I'd like you all to relax, recharge and enjoy the festive period with your families, and we will restart on MON 5TH JAN 2026. Have a great time and thanks for all your continued support over the year.

Best Wishes

OC

Last night saw FS Pierce from AFCO Outreach attend the sqn, with some brilliant teamworking exercises, which got the cadets working in groups using communication skills and a presentation on current opportunities within the Royal Air Force. The sqn was bursting at the seams last night and we were also joined later on the evening by OC3WW and some parents who were keen to ask FS Pierce questions. What a great evening!

1054 News:

Despite a wet morning, 1054 paraded in Llanelli town center this morning to mark remembrance 2025. With 27 cadets on parade, we also welcomed former OC Flt Lt Brian Evans and son Chris Evans to parade with us. This was to be Brian's final parade marching and we were honoured he joined us.

Also present was Lord Lt for Dyfed Sara Edwards with our own FS Steff Williams escorting on his first role as Lord Lt Cadet.

All cadets were excellent and given the short drill practices due to recent weather, they were again the best cadet force on parade.. well done all!

Well done to those cadets who attended today's Bronze Cyber course at 1054 (Llanelli) Sqn. Some great discussion and interaction made for an interesting day. Also, a competition of making a cat 5 cable was run, with free can of pop to those who managed to make a functioning cable first time (tested on the cable tester). Luckily i only lost 4 cans :) , but good effort by all.

Badges and certs issued and bader records updated.. well done all!

1054 (Llanelli) sqn were out today supporting RBL Llanelli with their poppy collecting in Morrisons, Parc Pemberton. The money was flowing in, with lots of people stopping to chat with the cadets, sharing stories of their military and cadet service. Lots of lovely comments about the cadets and their appearance. Well done!!

Last night's parade evening started out very normal, with the cadets practicing drill in preparation for upcoming remembrance parades. We were then alerted on social media to an emergency incident at the neighboring Selwyn Samuel Center, where an elderly gentleman from the bowls team was experiencing a cardiac arrest. FS Ken Lyons grabbed his defib and kit from his car to offer medical assistance as there was a reported 2hr (!!) delay for an ambulance.

FS Lyons helped stabilize the gentleman and accompanied him to West Wales General Hospital in Carmarthen in the family's car. On arrival, the duty Sister confirmed that the gentleman was extremely ill, but FS Lyons' actions had helped save him.

This is the 2nd time in 3 years that FS Lyons has been called to administer first aid in the vicinity of the sqn to members of the public. As a sqn, we are extremely proud of him and the help he gave last night- As we know, Ken is very modest and would say "it's my job", but it's proof that first aid is a very important skill and it made a difference last night..

Well Done Ken!!
