LGBTQ+ people are welcome on Strictly. Just don’t show too much support for them, apparently.
Bethany Antonia, an out and proud le***an, is currently competing in an all-female partnership with Nancy Xu, wore a T-shirt during rehearsals saying PROTECT THE DOLLS, a message of solidarity with trans women.

The BBC digitally erased the words for broadcast.
Their explanation? They routinely reduce the appearance of “overt branding or slogans”, regardless of the message.
Except this isn’t the first time.
In 2024, TRANS RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS on Ricky Wilson’s T-shirt was obscured on Michael McIntyre’s Big Show. Now PROTECT THE DOLLS gets the treatment.
Meanwhile, the BBC’s own news coverage has previously explained what “Protect the Dolls” means: safety, visibility and respect for transgender women.
Strictly is happy to celebrate LGBTQ+ contestants and same-sex partnerships. Not to mention professional dancers, drag queens and judges. Q***r guest performers have been the entertainment on the results show many times.
So why does a le***an contestant showing solidarity with trans people apparently require the digital eraser?
If this policy really is completely neutral, the BBC should have no difficulty demonstrating that it is applied consistently to other charitable, equality and solidarity messages.
Representation rings rather hollow when solidarity with part of our community is something that needs to be blurred out.
BBC, explain the inconsistency.
