Pencwm Haven Hedgehog Rescue Rehabilitating sick and injured hedgehogs in mid Wales

12/09/2025

Important announcement. Following a relationship breakdown the rescue is now closed. It is devastating news and it saddens me that I cannot continue to help the hedgehogs as I intended.
Thank you to all the lovely people who have supported me during this 15 month period.
Even though I will not continue through Havenmore, I very much hope to help animals in some capacity in the future. All Items fundraised for will go to Havenmore.

A big thank you to Knilco hardware shop on Middleton Street Llandrindod Wells and the Community shop in Llanbadarn Fynydd both being drop off sites for people who want to donate items for the rescue and will also have baskets in their stores for purchases.
We are also looking for people who can collect newspapers for the rescue. We go through a huge amount of these, as long as they are clean and dry we can use them.

A hedgehog was brought to us on Tuesday. Even though out in the evening the finder was concerned about the hog’s demeanour and appearance. We examined the hog and kept her overnight for observation. The next day after giving us a feacal sample, we were able to give her the all clear and she was released back home that night. We always welcome such a quick response from finders. All too often when hogs come to us they have been in trouble for too long and have gone beyond help. Sylvia the hog received some R&R in a cosy bed for the night and feasted on a ton of food, leaving with a full tummy. It’s always worth contacting us if you have a visiting hog which just doesn’t look right. Early intervention can save a life.

Received a gift from Amazon today so wanted to thank RE for sending it and thinking of us. 💕

This is Sue she’s so cute. She has a sore spot on the back of her neck we are cleaning and treating. After treatment she likes to climb into her little pouch on my knee for a cuddle. She quickly falls asleep and the trick is trying not to wake her when sneakily putting her back in her own bed💤

Shadow and Niki went to another lovely garden last night. Shadow came into the rescue after being pecked by a bird. After receiving treatment he was introduced to Niki a little girl of similar size. Babies can often do better together and as hedgehogs are not sexually mature until 9 months old we didn’t have to worry about any hanky panky 😆. Look at the cheeky looking pair 💕

Positioning your house and feeding station.

Place the house in a spot that is quiet, hidden away and won’t be in the sun.
Position the entrance away from the direction of prevailing winds.

The feed station should be around 20 feet away from the hedgehog house as not to draw predators in and as hedgehogs prefer to walk along the boundaries of a garden this would be a good place.

Feeding stations

Here are 2 easy to make feed stations. Use either a plastic storage box or house bricks.

Storage box (18 litre)
-A minimum of 12 inches wide X 18 inches and 6 inches deep
-Decide whether you want the lid on top or underneath
-Cut a hole 5 inches square (13cm) into the end
-Cover any rough edges with tape
-Line the inside with newspaper
-Put a brick on top to help prevent it being moved by a fox/cat.

Brick design
-With bricks on their sides built a structure with internal dimensions at least 12 x 18 inches
-The entrance should be a gap of 5 inches (13 cm)
-for the roof use a concrete slab or piece of wood with a brick on top to hold it down.

Place the food bowls furthest away from the entrance. If you don’t want to put the water bowl inside you can place it outside to the side of the entrance.
If you’re putting wet food out, put it out at night and throw it away daily as it will become contaminated.
Hedgehogs will soil the feeding station and the areas around. To clean do not use household products as they can be harmful. Hot soapy water will be sufficient.

Tips for improving your feeding station.
Having two exits on a feed station is a good idea. It allows a hedgehog to leave if another hedgehog is already feeding and minimises potential conflict.

To deter cats either place a brick close to the front entrance or inside the entrance or make a tunnel with bricks. Or try a dish of water right before the entrance, the hedgehogs won’t mind climbing over it but a cat will.

Siblings Nellie, Hilda, Ron & Harry came to us when they were just over 2 weeks old having been found without mum, they only weighed between 70-80 grams. Now 5 weeks later they are at smashing weights of 478, 583, 589 and 612g. They have been best buddies, staying together throughout their captivity and last night they were able to go back to their wonderful home. A fabulous environment with a dedicated human family to monitor and support them in their adjustment back to the wild. So much so that Spikey has also joined them, in his own separate house and feed station. Good luck precious hogs 💕

What to do!
Take a video and use Whatsapp to send to a rescue.
Pick it up straight away protect your hands with clothing or gloves.
Put it in a high sided box/carrier.
Put it somewhere warm, especially if the weather is cold. This means near to a radiator or with a heat pad or drinks bottle of hot water covered with a towel. Allow it room to move away from the heat if it wants.
Offer water only. If you are having to keep it overnight then you can give meat flavoured wet cat/dog food or cat biscuits.
Contact a rescue asap, speed can save lives.
