Members of the Nantmel Women's Institute gathered this morning for a lively Friendship Day meeting and plant swap at the local picnic area, proving that a little rain couldn't dampen their spirits or halt the exchange of green treasures.
Grey skies and an intermittent drizzle initially greeted attendees, raising concerns about the outdoor event. However, the determination and camaraderie of the WI members quickly prevailed, with participants setting up under what cover they could find, eager to share their horticultural delights and enjoy each other's company.
Undaunted by the damp start, laughter and lively conversation could soon be heard echoing around the picnic spot. And as if on cue, the clouds began to part, and the sun broke through, bathing the scene in a warm, inviting glow.
This timely appearance of sunshine coincided with the burgeoning success of the plant swap. Tables, once sparsely populated, quickly became a vibrant array of seedlings, cuttings, and established plants, from fragrant herbs and colourful perennials to promising vegetable starts. Members eagerly chatted, sharing gardening tips and stories as they carefully selected new additions for their own patches.
"It just goes to show that true friendship and a passion for gardening can conquer any weather," commented one smiling member, admiring a new Christmas cactus plant "We had a fantastic turnout, and so many wonderful plants found new homes."
The event was hailed as a resounding success, not only for the impressive quantity and variety of plants exchanged but more importantly, for reinforcing the strong bonds of friendship within Nantmel WI. It served as a delightful reminder of the group's resilience, shared interests, and their role as a vibrant pillar of the community.
Nantmel WI looks forward to next Thursday, the 7th August when the annual picnic olympics takes place at 1pm. All welcome just pop along with your picnic!
