Radnorshire Wildlife Trust

Radnorshire Wildlife Trust Promoting an environment rich in wildlife for everyone in Radnorshire 🦡 The Radnorshire Wildlife Trust (RWT) is one of the youngest wildlife trusts in the UK.

Established in 1987 as a volunteer only group we have grown to an organisation with 19 wildlife reserves across the county covering a range of habitats from woodland to moorland, wetland to meadow. The Radnorshire Wildlife Trust undertakes a wide range of work including:

•General management of reserves with the assistance of a team of volunteers
•Developing a network of private nature reserves, a

n innovative project which provides a self-help group for smallholders who otherwise would get little or no assistance in managing their land for wildlife
•Surveys of vulnerable and endangered species
•Liaison with landowners on good conservation management
•Providing events throughout the year, including talks, children’s events and exhibitions, all centred on wildlife and conservation
•A range of educational activities many of which are delivered at our visitor centre - Gilfach Nature Discovery Centre.

How long can you watch baby hedgehogs chomping on cat food? If the answer is 2 minutes and 9 seconds, you're in for a treat!

Our conservation intern Rhodri captured these little ones in his garden back in 2022!

As opportunistic eaters, hedgehogs will happily tuck into food left out in your garden. The best options are:
🐾 Meat-based cat or dog food
🦔 Specially-made hedgehog food
🥣 Cat biscuits

It's also good to put out a shallow dish of fresh water as it can be a real lifeline, especially in hot, dry weather.

And despite what people may think, hedgehogs are lactose intolerant, so please skip the milk!

Glow-worm season is here!

June and July are the best months to catch these remarkable beetles in action.

🪱🪲Despite the name, glow-worms are beetles, not worms. The females are wingless and spend summer nights climbing plant stems and glowing greeny-orange to attract a mate. Males have large photosensitive eyes built for scanning vegetation in the dark.

The larvae are also surprisingly fierce, they hunt slugs and snails, delivering toxic bites that paralyse and dissolve their prey. They've even been known to ride on a snail's back while waiting for the process to do its work.

Did you know? glow-worms have been spotted at our nature reserve at Gilfach 🌿 - pics 2 and 3 were taken by our conservation intern Rhodri. We have a Glow-worm Walk at Gilfach coming up at the end of June, details to follow soon.

SAVE OUR RED SQUIRRELS!! 📢

Support vaccine development to save red squirrels from DEADLY squirrelpox virus...
Grey squirrels carry this virus without being affected, but it is deadly to our native red squirrels.

Without action, squirrelpox threatens to wipe out red squirrel populations across Wales - including those on Anglesey and in Clocaenog Forest (Denbighshire and Conwy).

We’re joining calls for the Welsh Government to commit to developing and deploying a squirrelpox vaccine before they are lost forever. The science already exists, the costs are relatively low, and action is urgently needed.

Please support the campaign and sign the petition. Every signature helps protect the future of our red squirrels ❤️🐿️ - https://petitions.senedd.wales/petitions/246919

ACHUB EIN GWIWEROD COCH!! 📢

Cefnogwch ddatblygu brechlyn i achub gwiwerod coch rhag feirws ANGHEUOL brech y gwiwerod...
Mae gwiwerod llwyd yn cario'r feirws yma heb gael eu heffeithio, ond mae’n angheuol i'n gwiwerod coch brodorol ni.

Heb weithredu, mae brech y gwiwerod yn bygwth dileu poblogaethau o wiwerod coch ledled Cymru - gan gynnwys y rhai ar Ynys Môn ac yng Nghoedwig Clocaenog (Sir Ddinbych a Chonwy).

Rydyn ni'n ymuno â'r galw ar Lywodraeth Cymru i ymrwymo i ddatblygu a defnyddio brechlyn brech y gwiwerod cyn iddyn nhw gael eu colli am byth. Mae'r wyddoniaeth eisoes yn bodoli, mae'r costau'n gymharol isel, ac mae angen gweithredu ar frys.

Plîs cefnogwch yr ymgyrch a llofnodi'r ddeiseb. Mae pob llofnod yn helpu i warchod dyfodol ein gwiwerod coch ni. ❤️🐿️ - https://petitions.senedd.wales/petitions/246919
