Nothing quite like a bit of bracken bashing on a Monday morning, especially with those views! We've started to clear some areas at our Bracken Gorge project ready for tree planting in the winter. Small steps in a big bracken battle. A barn owl and common lizard encounter were an unexpected bonus.

👋 This week we say goodbye to Rachael our Project Coordinator as she moves on to pastures new and a different role within the Marches Business Group

As a small team Rachael has been involved in all aspects of Wilba, from travelling the breadth of Mid Wales on farm visits, open days and school workshops to erecting owl boxes, dormouse boxes and soil sampling.

Thank you for making lots of brilliant habitat creation projects happen and planting your fair share of saplings along the way! 💪🌱

The countryside crisp... At times like this we value the humble hedgerow, still full of life, starting to bear berries and hazel nuts and providing much needed shelter and shade for livestock.

Work has started on our Norman's Wood project.

On a farm in the north of Radnorshire. This 0.5 hectare woodland is grazed by sheep and cattle and is mainly made up of Scots Pine along with other species of trees. A small stream runs down through the trees, which feeds into Llaethdy Brook. Norman’s Wood connects to another area of broad-leaf woodland before opening up onto hill pasture where the red kites and buzzards sore.

Our traditional hay meadow seems to be thriving this year. This two-acre patch is grazed over winter and becomes a wildlife haven throughout the summer months before being cut for hay bales.

It's home to lots of strangely named grasses such as Crested dog's tail, Yorkshire fog, Cocksfoot and Creeping bent.

Other plant life includes, red and white Clover, Bird's-foot Trefoil, Rough Hawkbit, swathes of Oxeye Daisies, Betony and Common Spotted Orchids.

There are bees, butterflies and moths a plenty, swallows swooping overhead and this year a pair of courting hares has been spotted.
