PRIME Cymru

PRIME Cymru PRIME Cymru is a registered charity, supporting people aged 50+ in Wales to secure work, set up a business or upskill through training and volunteering.

We were founded in 2001 by HRH The Prince of Wales, in response to letters he had received from many people saying that they felt that after the age of 50 they were on the ‘scrap heap’ and they had faced insurmountable problems in securing paid employment because of their age.

Let’s challenge stereotypes - including the ones we’ve learned to believe about ourselves! 💚

Internalised ageism can affect the way we perceive ourselves, our self-esteem, and what we think we are capable or worthy of.

It can lead us to limit or underestimate ourselves; to tell ourselves that we are 'too old' to learn something new, to wear particular clothes or visit a certain place, or to socialise at work.

But the first step to challenging ageism is to notice it.

So, the next time we find ourselves thinking if something is 'appropriate at our age'...we can also ask ourselves: who is deciding these 'rules'!?

Ageism. Notice it. Challenge it. Change it.

Note - this is our own definition of internalised ageism, but we'd love to hear what you think too!

Thank you, Clive, for your continued support and for helping us spread the word about the value, experience and ambition that people over 50 bring. 💚

Another great example of how it’s never too late to try something new.

Theo of Golden is the debut novel by Allen Levi, an ex-lawyer, judge and musician from Alabama who, just shy of 70, decided to take try writing fiction for the first time.

What started as a self-published novel in 2023 has since become a global phenomenon, selling more than a million copies!

🌟 Could you help someone turn their business idea into reality?

PRIME Cymru is looking for Volunteer Mentors to support aspiring entrepreneurs aged 50+ across Wales.

Our Volunteer Mentors give as much time as they can, sharing their own business knowledge, experience and encouragement to help others take the next step on their entrepreneurial journey.

📍 You can volunteer from anywhere in the world. Thanks to modern technology, our mentors can support Welsh people wherever they are - we even have a mentor based in Mexico! 🌎

Being 50, 60 or 70 doesn’t mean your working life has to be winding down.

It's time employers stopped seeing age as a cost, and started seeing experience as an asset!

We're delighted to welcome Debra Drake as a PRIME Cymru Ambassador!💚

After appearing on BBC's The Great British Sewing Bee, Debra decided it was time to leave her corporate career behind and turn her passion for sewing into a business, launching Debra Sewing with Style.

As she took those first steps into self-employment, Debra received mentoring from PRIME Cymru Volunteer Mentor Nick Bradley. His guidance and encouragement gave her the confidence to grow her business.

In this video, Debra shares just how invaluable that support was. She hopes her story will inspire more people aged 50+ to not be afraid to take a different path in their career.
