The Carbon Community

The Carbon Community Dedicated to accelerating carbon removal in trees and soil with breakthrough science. Registered charity in England and Wales 1187231.

Learn more about Glandwr Forest, our carbon study, field-trial facility and community science program. We are a UK Charity dedicated to creating forests and removing carbon from the atmosphere, with breakthrough science. Focused on natural solutions, we started with a question. β€˜How do you maximise the carbon sequestered in a forest?’ This led to many discussions and much debate with woodland exp

erts, government organisations and leading scientists. Conversations that helped shape our mission: to create forests and accelerate carbon removal, with breakthrough science. Our planting and restoration projects are designed, together with world leading scientists, to learn more about how to accelerate carbon sequestration. We are committed to sharing our findings as widely as possible to increase carbon removal in our own projects and beyond. Our first major carbon study was launched in May 2021, you can get involved by joining one of our Community Science Days. We create forests for carbon and always will. Our forests will take a minimum 35 years to reach adolescence, and the charity structure ensures that the trees, soil and biodiversity that they support, will be proactively managed for generations. A forest is so much more that the trees. Join us.

Let's talk about trains and the , which runs between Swansea and Shrewsbury and passes over the beautiful Cynghordy viaduct.

Over the years, we have had many people visit The Carbon Community by train, including two people just last weekend.

πŸ›€οΈ Swansea to Cynghordy (Swansea University student)
πŸ›€οΈ Cardiff to Cynghordy (Cardiff University student)
πŸ›€οΈ London to Cynghordy to spend a few days measuring trees
πŸ›€οΈ Germany to Cynghordy (A researcher who visited us and another research site in the UK)

Let's call it Citizen Science by train!

Checking the schedule, you can take the train to our upcoming Meadow Walks on Saturday, 27th June. Click the link for full details of the event. https://bit.ly/CarbonComMeadow26

β€œTo see a world in a grain of sand and a heaven in a wildflower.” William Blake

🌸 Starting a Monday morning with some beautiful orchid blooms. This one is a Common Spotted Orchid (Dactylorhiza fuchsii) which thrives in damp, unimproved meadows.

Why not join one of The Carbon Community's upcoming meadow walks? We'll be joined by a local expert to help identify species and will also be counting butterflies as part of the Big Butterfly Count.

Lunchtime at our volunteering sessions is always a great chance to get to know each other and chat about almost anything, from trees and science to nature and art!

Yesterday, we learned about this lovely exhibition at the International Welsh Rarebit Centre in Defynnog featuring Mountain Air Artists (and one of our volunteers).

It's on until the 28th of June!

Reflecting on a fantastic day in Glandwr Forest and the fabulousness of our volunteer community. Volunteers, we couldn't do it without you!

🌳 Saturday was a big day for the Carbon Study Spruce Up! 1,500 stakes were firmly secured, and broken ones replaced to ensure all the barcodes are in the right space. Corner posts had a spruce-up too, with 25 old ones swapped for new.

πŸ’š Thank you to everyone who joined from near and far and brought their own sunshine. Special shout-out to two students, one from Cardiff University and one from Swansea University, who joined us today and took the Heart of Wales Line train all the way!

🌱 Spending a day with people who love the outdoors is always a delight, with everyone sharing their own enthusiasm, expertise and insight.

We're back again tomorrow for another day of citizen science volunteering!

It's and - feeling grateful for all those giving their time and energy for nature and science!

Two of those events are at Glandwr Forest this weekend!

Join us for a day of community Science Volunteering.

We'll be working on 'sprucing up' the Glandwr Forest Carbon Study, including checking the barcodes in the research area and painting the centre posts that help identify the centre of each plot. It's a great way to learn more about the design of this large-scale field trial!

One of the amazing things at Glandwr Forest is watching nature thrive, and we are loving this initiative from the Bank of England to celebrate the UK's Wildlife.

There are three categories (mammals; birds; and amphibians insects & fish) and you can choose up to two from each!

Have you voted yet?

This week, across the UK, organisations are thanking volunteers past and present for their invaluable contributions. has been running for over forty years, and it is incredible to read the stories of the longevity of so many volunteering programs.

The Carbon Community launched its volunteer program exactly five years ago, in June 2021. At the time, Covid rules were loosening a bit and being together outdoors became an exciting possibility again. With a picnic table, a second-hand sun umbrella, and plenty of hand sanitiser, we started recruiting for volunteers and crossed our fingers.

Since then, we have been amazed and inspired by the commitment, energy, and impact of the hundreds of people who have joined in, contributing to climate science and caring for Glandwr Forest.

Our latest blog looks back over the last five years and YOUR incredible contributions.

Close to 100,000 tree measurements, 30,000 tag checks, tree planting, hedge-laying, geo-positioning, and more.

From all of us, thank you.

ps. Does anyone remember the orange rope? IYKYK

A bit of a Saturday Species post - galls forming on an Oak tree from the oak marble gall wasp, Andricus kollari, a tiny wasp that causes galls on oak leaves.

As spotted at when we were out and about working on our Carbon Study Spruce Up.
