Scotland’s summer of heatwaves and wildfires is a stark reminder: the climate crisis is also an animal welfare emergency.

🦔 Wild animals experience fear, pain and death as fires scorch the habitats they depend on.

🐖 Farmed animals are suffering from diseases such as bluetongue virus, which is being driven by rising temperatures.

🐄 Animals transported for slaughter can face dangerously hot conditions inside lorries during long journeys.

And there’s a cruel cycle at the heart of this crisis: intensive animal farming is contributing to the climate emissions driving global heating, while animals suffer the consequences.

We cannot tackle the climate crisis without tackling animal suffering too. Read more from OneKind CEO Jason Rose ➡️ https://www.onekind.org/blog/why-scotlands-climate-crisis-is-an-animal-welfare-crisis

🐾 What is the Programme for Government — and why does it matter for animals?

Every September, The Scottish Government sets out its priorities for the year ahead.

🦊 When animal protections make it into the Programme for Government, it gives us an important lever to hold the Government accountable for delivering them.

We’re calling for three key commitments:

1. End the use of farrowing cages
2. Tackle the animal welfare crisis caused by the exotic pet trade
3. Strengthen welfare and wildlife laws to better protect wild animals

We need your voice to make sure animals are heard. Take our quick e-action and send an email to the Government today ➡️ https://ow.ly/KVKx50ZFExC

Please share this post to help us put animal welfare firmly on the agenda. 🧡

NatureScot recently announced that this year's guga hunt will not be licensed, meaning the planned killing of 2,000 young gannets on Sula Sgeir will not go ahead.

While much of the discussion has focused on population impacts, for us this has always been about animal welfare. Every gannet is an individual living being capable of feeling fear, distress and suffering. The method used during the hunt raises serious welfare concerns, and the Scottish Animal Welfare Commission has stated that there is no humane way for the activity to take place.

This decision is an important step, but it is not the end of the story.

The legal loophole that currently allows the hunt still exists, meaning future licences could be granted. If we want lasting protection for these birds, we need Scottish Ministers to strengthen protections for wild animals and remove exemptions that permit unnecessary suffering.

For more than a year, OneKind has been engaging constructively with decision-makers, sharing evidence, meeting with key stakeholders and ensuring that animal welfare remains at the centre of the conversation.

Now we need your help to keep that momentum going.

Please take a moment to add your voice to our e-action calling for stronger protections for Scotland's wild animals ➡️

🚨 New OneKind action to stop the guga hunt. 📢 In a simple sentence, head to their quick & simple e-action to let Government officials know why the guga hunt must be stopped.

OneKind has commissioned a report into the use of animals in experiments across Scotland's universities and pharmaceutical companies.

Our findings will be published later this year, helping to shine a light on the current state of animal testing in Scotland and why change is needed.
