Fife Charities Band Association Contest 2026

What a day for Bathgate Brass Band!

We were absolutely delighted yesterday to have come away with a 1st place overall at Fife Charities Band Association (March, Hymn and test piece) contest - and even more thrilled to be awarded the Winning Conductor prize for our hard-working MD, Craig Anderson!

There was plenty more to celebrate too, with Bathgate Brass Band also picking up prizes for:
1st Section Winner
Best Horn
Best Basses
Best Percussion
Best non-Fife band

AND an invitation to the 2027 British Open Spring Festival - Senior Trophy next May

We were drawn 6th and performed The Australasian (W.Rimmer), Lord of All Hopefulness (arr. Downie) and Journey to the Centre of the Earth (P Graham).

A huge well done to all our players for the hard work and commitment that went into preparing for yesterday, and a massive thank you to everyone who supports us, both on and off the contest stage.

Congratulations to all the bands taking part, and a special well done to Bo'ness & Carriden & Coalburn Silver who got the 2nd and 3rd places

Also a huge thank you for a very well-run contest by FCBA

6 Bathgate band

March- The Australasian
Great band sound and poise to start. Dynamics are good and things lead to a good cornet solo. Band sound is good and everything comes through well, including the syncopation in the trombones. Oh that dynamics shift caught me before the trio, well done. The trio is good. Cornet is again good and full band sound comes across well and leads to a strong finish.

Hymn - Lord of all Hopefulness
Never heard this arrangement before. Lovely start. Warm band sounds. Balance is good from the off set. Cornet does well, just take care on top note. Great Trombones. Full band sounds is good, just look after the little interjections. Great quiet dynamics. Lovely finish

Test piece - Journey to the centre of the Earth
Effective start with percussion and muted brass. Flugel, Baritone, Cornet and Euph come across well. Transition into the faster tempo works well. Stab notes come through well and this is all very effective. Balance between percussion and band is generally good. Rhythmic detail is good. Good change of pace and tubas do well, just a couple of scrapes in the top register. Sop sings well as do Baritones. Again the change of pace is god and the Trombone does well. As does Cornet and Sop in their cadenza style solos. Lovely Flugel sound. Nice horn solo. It’s a nice band sound, just the odd moment of tuning across the band.Cornet and Euph play well together. Don’t worry about blips. The whispers are very effective. Great Bass Trombone This flows well, maybe could take a touch more pulse in the groups of 3. Great animal noises low brass! Leads to a strong close. Thank you.

They think it's all over... it is now!

After more than six weeks of non-stop football, Spain have been crowned World Champions for the second time, bringing an end to a tournament that had everything – unforgettable moments, disappointments, plenty of controversy, and lots of drama along the way. It certainly kept us entertained... even if the final wasn't the most exciting! And while Scotland's wait to make it beyond the group stages continues, we'll always have Boston!

With the World Cup now over, our Predictor Competition has also come to an end.

A fantastic 34 people took part, and the winner wasn't decided until the final whistle of the tournament!
Congratulations to Angela Sim, who finished on 156 points to claim the £135 first prize, just 2 points ahead of Andrew Gerrard, who takes home the £35 runner-up prize. 👏

⚽ The total number of goals scored during the tournament was 308. Nobody guessed it exactly, but a special mention goes to Nick Greet, who was closest with 312.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who took part. Together you've helped raise £170 for Bathgate Brass Band.
While it might not seem like a huge amount, every pound makes a real difference and helps us continue making music in our community. Your support is genuinely appreciated, and we never take it for granted.

We hope you'll continue to follow and support the band at our future events. Thank you once again, and congratulations to all our winners!

A small group from Bathgate Brass Band were honoured to provide music over the weekend as part of a very special occasion for the local community.

On Friday 3rd July, the group performed at St Mary's Church, Bathgate, for the Ordination to the Sacred Priesthood of Rev. Matthew McCafferty. It was a privilege to be invited to contribute to such a significant milestone in Father Matthew's vocation, helping to mark this memorable occasion with music.

The celebrations continued on Saturday 4th July, when the group returned to St Mary's and St. Columba's, Bathgate to perform at Father Matthew McCafferty's first mass celebrated as an ordained priest. Family, friends, parishioners and visitors gathered to celebrate the beginning of his priestly ministry.

We are always proud when our members are invited to represent the band at important community occasions, and it was a privilege to be part of such a joyful and historic weekend for Father Matthew, St Mary's Parish, his family, and the wider Bathgate community.

Congratulations to Father Matthew McCafferty on his ordination. We wish him every blessing and success as he begins his ministry.
Thank you to St Mary's and St. Columba's Parish for the invitation to be part of these special celebrations.
