As Volunteers Week comes to a close, we would like to take this opportunity to give a huge shout-out and heartfelt thank you to our incredible volunteers.

Every day, our volunteers provide vital support to older people across the Scottish Borders, helping them to remain independent, connected, and living well in their own homes. From collecting and delivering shopping, to offering a friendly face and a listening ear, their kindness, dedication, and generosity make a real difference to the lives of our members.

The support our volunteers provide goes far beyond practical help. They help reduce loneliness and isolation, strengthen community connections, and bring reassurance to people who may otherwise struggle to access essential services. We simply couldn't do what we do without them.

To all of our volunteers – thank you for your time, compassion, and commitment. You are at the heart of everything we do, and we are incredibly grateful for the positive impact you make throughout our communities.

If you've been inspired by our volunteers and would like to find out more about becoming part of the team, we'd love to hear from you. You can email [email protected], call 01896 751750, or pop into Tesco Galashiels on any Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday between 7:00am and 10:00am, where members of our team will be happy to have a chat about volunteering opportunities.

Together, we can continue making a difference across the Scottish Borders.

💐 Mother’s Day Appeal 💐

Thanks to the incredible support from communities across Scotland, we’ve raised over £3,300 and welcomed 82 new supporters to Food Train 💛

This generosity means we can continue delivering vital services to older people—helping them stay nourished, connected, and independent at home, so that every older person in Scotland can thrive.

Our appeal also reached more people than ever before. We received new enquiries about our services, connected with people interested in volunteering, and shared Edna’s story more widely—highlighting the real impact of our work.

Whether you donated, shared the appeal, or support Food Train in other ways—thank you. Your support truly makes a difference and helps us reach more older people who need us.

☎️ Volunteer From Home – Help Older People Stay Connected & Well

We’re looking for friendly volunteers to help make weekly calls to our Food Train members across the Scottish Borders.

Every Monday between 10am–2pm, our volunteers call older people to collect their shopping lists for the week. It’s simple, flexible, and can be done entirely from home – all you need is a computer and a welcoming voice.

💚 What you’ll do

Call a small group of members each week
Build rapport and enjoy regular friendly chats
Collect shopping lists to help them stay independent

You’ll be assigned the same members, giving you the chance to create meaningful connections and brighten someone’s week.

✨ What we offer

Full training and ongoing support
Flexible volunteering – help weekly or on an ad-hoc basis
A rewarding way to support older people in your community

If you have a few hours to spare on a Monday and would love to make a real difference from home, we’d love to hear from you.

📞To find out more or to sign up, please call the office on 01896 751750

💜 She’s 100 years old and still living independently in the home she loves.

Today, on International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating women like Edna who have spent their lives building families, communities, and memories.

International Women’s Day has been celebrated for over a century. In 2026 it marks 115 years of collective action, recognising the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and the progress still to be made toward gender equality.

Edna has lived in Dumfries all her life. Thanks to Food Train volunteers, she can continue living happily at home, with her shopping delivered and always a friendly chat to brighten her day. For many older women in our communities, these visits bring connection, reassurance, and independence.

This Mother’s Day, we’re celebrating women like Edna and helping ensure older people can live well at home.

💜Your support can make a real difference.
