Unfortunately, we have suffered a few break ins over recent months. Although damage has been relatively minor - mainly to over wing windows - a fire extinguisher was discharged at one point and it has been very time consuming to clean up the powder. We have had to remove all the seats from the flight deck, these have been taken outside for a wash. They evidently weren’t designed to save weight! We have also taken the opportunity to repaint the floor.

To discourage break ins, metal plates have been screwed across the over wing windows. Whilst these are a little unsightly, they will hopefully put all but the most determined from gaining access.

Despite the very wet weather we have experienced over the summer, the aircraft hasn’t leaked badly. Nevertheless, we have identified the odd water ingress and remedial action has been taken, either with speed tape or putty.

After a good few weeks of poor weather, we were able to make the most of the sunshine yesterday and pressed on with the annual Spring cleaning, courtesy of good old fashioned scrubbing and pressure washer. Rob is great at details such as screw heads with Bar Keepers Friend and a toothbrush.

As ever, the North facing surfaces suffer the most from a build up of over Winter algae and although it’s a slow job she is looking impressive.

It’s especially important to keep on with the annual cleaning as the salty air from Liverpool Bay is corrosive to the metal.

The weather over recent weeks has not been conducive for painting, being either too hot/windy/wet. However, this Saturday was perfect and we managed to complete the majority of the tailplane. As it’s currently upside down, once finished we will be turning it over to see what the size of our next task will be!

We have concentrated on the tailplane over recent weeks. As you can see, it’s a fair size! After much scrubbing and pressure washing, a number of years’ worth of dirt and grime has been removed and we have now started the painting process. The tailplane is currently upside down,. Once the underside is complete, volunteers from the co located Speke Aviation Heritage Group have kindly offered to assist us in turning it over - subject to us buying them breakfast! You can see photos of their 748 and Prince on their page.
