On World Mental Health Day, it's important to recognise the emotional impact of cancer on people across the North West.

From waiting for results to going through treatment or adjusting to life afterwards, cancer can bring uncertainty, anxiety and feelings of isolation.

Family, friends and carers can feel that impact too.

You don’t have to feel positive all the time and you don’t have to manage difficult feelings alone. Your mental wellbeing deserves care and attention at every stage.

If you’re struggling, speak to your GP or cancer care team about the support available.

If someone you know is affected by cancer, make time to check in and listen, without expecting them to put on a brave face.

A simple "how are you" can make all the difference.

BREAST CANCER IS THE MOST COMMON CANCER IN THE NORTH WEST 🔍

Across our region, breast cancer has a significant impact on our communities, with prevalence in Cumbria and Cheshire recorded at 16% and 14% above the national average.

That’s why it’s so important to know what is normal for you and to check yourself regularly.

Try to check at around the same time every month and look out for any changes in the breast, chest or armpit area.

If you notice something unusual, or anything that concerns you, contact your GP practice and get it checked.

Researchers at the University of Lancashire are exploring a new way to treat glioblastoma, including whether treatment could be delivered directly to the brain through the nose.

The team, led by Professor Kamalinder Singh, is investigating RNA interference, or RNAi, to target genes that help cancer cells grow and survive, alongside tiny lipid nanoparticles designed to carry treatment into the brain.

If successful, the research could help pave the way towards a less invasive treatment for this aggressive form of brain cancer, with the potential to extend survival and improve quality of life.

26.2 MILES OF GRATITUDE🏃‍♀️

A huge congratulations and thank you to Ellie Kenyon, who took on the Berlin Marathon in support of North West Cancer Research.

Ellie set herself a fundraising target of £2,250 and has gone beyond it, raising over £2,600 to support life-saving cancer research across the North West.

Training for and completing a marathon takes a serious amount of commitment, and we’re so grateful that Ellie chose to put that effort behind our work.

Thank you, Ellie, and thank you to everyone who has supported her along the way.
