Marjorie "Peggy" Maskrey MBE (born 30th September 1920 – 3rd June 2023, aged 103). Peggy was regarded as one of Britain's longest-serving volunteers, dedicating over 80 years towards the work of Charles Thompson's Mission, a charity serving homeless and vulnerable people in Birkenhead.
Born in Birkenhead on 30 September 1920, she benefited from the mission as a child before officially starting as a volunteer at age 14, arriving with her mother Dolly Monaghan.
She helped serve thousands of meals to needy and homeless people and continued almost until her death.
Awarded an MBE in the 2018 Queen's Birthday Honours for services to the community.
She also won the Community Personality award at the 2018 Liverpool Echo Awards.
She died on Monday 3rd June, surrounded by family. Charles Thompson Mission paid tribute to her "great strength of character and indomitable spirit, a true example in faithfulness," Her own words summed up her outlook: "I absolutely love it here, helping those who need it... it's very much a home-from-home for me.".."it's been a pleasure to help others for over 80 years- I've never seen it as work".
Peggy became a symbol of lifelong service on the Wirral, with many calling for a statue or mural in her honour after her death.
Even at 100, she remained characteristically determined about returning: "I've always made the tea over the years and I'll always be here – they'll have to carry me out!"
