We had a great day out today at the Shap Pink Quarry in Cumbria hosted by Steve Elliot of Armstrongs Group. The site covers about 60-70 hectares and is quarried for road stone as well as rock armour. The granite intrusion is Devonian in age (415.6 +/-1.4 Ma) and is remarkable for its megacrysts of orthoclase feldspar which give it its pink hue. These often demonstrate Carlsbad twinning. Mafic inclusions - historically described as xenoliths - are very common and joints in the granite are often coated with pyrite.

We're very much looking forward to James Hutton and the Restless Earth on BBC Radio 4 this weekend: Sunday 9th August at 19:15 (and repeated Wednesday 12th at 15:00).

With specially performed music, song and spoken word, award-winning
musician and writer Karine Polwart in collaboration with pianist Dave Milligan
and sound designer Pippa Murphy Music - explores one of James Hutton’s most radical concepts: Deep Time.

Day 3 of our Jurassic Coast field excursion took us to Lulworth Cove, Stair Hole, Durdle Dor and the Fossil Forest led by Peter Burgess of Liverpool University. Spectacular scenery and geological features and ice cream as a reward at the end.

We had a treat on the last day of our Jurassic Coast field excursion today as Steve Etches MBE gave us a guided tour of his award winning museum at Kimmeridge Bay. Steve is a national treasure and the museum is a must for keen fossil lovers.

Learn about the region’s fascinating geological history in our summer exhibition, Echoes of Ancient Lands and Seas: Fossils from Cheshire, curated by Harriet Williams, our curatorial intern from the University of Liverpool. Opens 20 June 2026 at the Grosvenor Museum.
