Today marks the International Day of Older Persons, a global observance held every year on 1st October since it was established by the United Nations in 1990.

The day celebrates the contributions of older adults and addresses the challenges of a rapidly aging population.

The UK theme for this year is “What’s on your doorstep?”

This theme calls upon us to celebrate the people, places and services that help older people to stay active and connected in our community, whilst shining a light on the barriers that can make them harder to access.

To mark this year’s International Day of Older Persons, we will be bringing together Pine Court residents for a warm, accessible and enjoyable community event that recognises older people, encourages connection and showcases local support and opportunities.

Liverpool is home to one of the oldest Chinese communities in Europe, and Pine Court has a significant number of Chinese residents, who have rich personal histories and experiences to share. By inviting residents to share their stories, we can recognise the strength, resilience and contribution of the Chinese community while also understanding what helps people feel included, valued and connected in later life.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, or Moon Festival, is a harvest festival celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Lunar Calendar. For this year, the festival lands on 25th September 2026.

The Moon Festival is a celebration that promotes the gathering of family and friends, as well as celebrating a good harvest year on the day where the moon is the brightest and fullest. To celebrate, lanterns of all shapes and colours are hung up and carried around during the night, while enjoying a meal with the family. The most common food eaten during the festival are mooncakes, a patterned pastry filled with sweet-bean or lotus-seed paste and sometimes filled with an egg yolk to resemble the full moon.

At Pine Court, we are celebrating with the Chung Hok House Resident Association to enjoy traditional stories with the residents of Chung Hok House, as well as eating Chinese meals and mooncakes.

Sometimes it’s not easy to explain a problem in your home over the phone – it’s much easier to show someone.

So we’re pleased to announce that we’ve started trialling the use of video call technology to help our customers do exactly that, focusing initially on gas and electric emergencies and some damp and mould-related repairs.

With video calling, we can potentially diagnose the problem straight away over the phone and either help customers solve it there and then, or figure out what’s wrong, order any parts we may need to fix it and book an appointment to come and solve the problem first time.

We believe this could save customers a lot of time and money, which we can use to focus on repairs and other works, helping to drive down customer waiting times for support.

Around 4,000 people attend A&E each year in England as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning, highlighting the importance of regular gas safety checks and ensuring working carbon monoxide alarms.

That's why, during Gas Safety Week 2026, we're reminding customers of a few simple actions that can help keep you and your household safe:

✅ Allow access for your annual gas safety inspection
✅ Test your carbon monoxide alarm every week
✅ Only use Gas Safe registered engineers
✅ Report any gas safety concerns straight away

If you smell gas or suspect a leak, contact the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999.

Introducing Phoebe, our new Bi-Lingual Housing Apprentice!

Phoebe joined us a month ago, and says: "Before joining Pine Court, I was always looking into doing something that would help others. Seeing the work that Pine Court had done for a community that I grew up in, I knew that I could also do my part in helping those in need.

"Since joining, I have been shown so many different opportunities to expand my knowledge on how Pine Court works as a team and as a community. I have met and spoken to all kinds of people and have learned just how diverse and unique people can be. Working here means that no two days are the same, and every day has been a learning experience on how we can help our tenants with any issues they may have to ensure that their comfort and happiness are our top priorities.

"I’m looking forward to future community events where we can see, in person, the impact we can have on our tenants and the wider community."

We all know the advice about keeping cool in hot weather – drink plenty of water, stay in the shade, keep curtains and blinds closed to prevent heat getting in. But did you know that hot weather can increase the risk of damp, mould and condensation in our homes?

This is because warm air holds more water vapour than cool air, which means that during hot spells indoor humidity rises, especially in homes with closed windows or poor airflow. Warm air absorbs moisture from cooking, showering, and drying clothes. This is the same way that winter condensation happens, but in the summer, this is driven by humidity rather than cold.

So what can we do to reduce the risks of damp, mould and condensation during the hot summer months?

* Ventilate early morning and late evening when the air is cooler
* Always use an extractor fan if available to remove moisture from the air, particularly after showering or cooking
* If you have one, use a dehumidifier during laundry and showers
* Move furniture slightly off external walls to discourage mould and damp from forming - check behind furniture weekly for mould
* Keep blinds closed during the day to reduce indoor heat
